This article will discuss some of the ways you can stop them without medication.

Most sufferers report that they feel as though they are going to die, and yet panic attacks cannot physically hurt you. However, they take away the freedom and well-being of people who suffer from them, making them a slave to their fears. Symptoms may include rapid heartbeat, chest pains, sweating, feeling dizzy, numbness in various body parts, trembling, and fainting.

Most attacks occur from prolonged periods of anxiety and stress. This can come from a significant loss, divorce, death of a loved one, job stress, and sometimes from just a general feeling of not being in control of the things happening around you.

The attack itself is physically harmless: if you or someone you love suffers from one, they are not heart attacks. They do not cause any damage to your body. However, they are terrifying to go through – and having had one, the fear of having another can often actually cause another attack. It is a downward spiral where because the victim fears something, that something is more likely to happen.

Modern doctors often use drugs to calm sufferers of this malady. Tranquilizers like Valium calm the person; antidepressants like Paxil or Zoloft work on the theory that they regulate brain chemistry and restore balance. However, a drug that works for one person can have no effect on other people, and many drugs have negative side effects such as loss of sexual urges or, rarely but dangerously, the development of suicidal thoughts. For these reasons, many people are looking for alternatives.

There are natural therapies that can be used to help lessen anxiety and train the sufferer to be able to control panic attacks. Yoga and meditation are excellent for overall de-stressing and allowing a person to learn to control their thought patterns – which can help you take control of negative thoughts as they begin to build. Hypnotherapy, counseling, and support groups can help individuals learn about anxiety and train how to better control it.

Whichever method you choose, the most important core issue is fear of future attacks. Learning to face this fear is the most important factor in a return to a happy, psychologically healthy life. The fear of having another panic attack, and thoughts of “Oh no, it’s happening again!” as your anxiety levels increase, are two of the biggest triggers to suffering another incident. If you can learn how to effectively deal with these two issues, you will win your fight against panic attacks.

If you have a child that suffers from such a problem, then read on. There are some things that you can do to help.

Typically, young people feel a form of seperation anxiety when they spend more and more time away from the family environment — whatever type that may be — in which they were raised. Being away from a primary attachment figure can cause people at least four years or older to feel some form of separation anxiety. A primary attachment figure may include a parent or parents, a caregiver, or other such figures. Feeling a sense of separation anxiety is fairly normal — except in very extreme cases that deter the person with the anxiety from living a normal life. For example, not being able to attend grade school as a child because of fear of being away from home is a severe type of seperation anxiety. On the other hand, though, being afraid of the dark as a child is not very severe and does not get in the way of living day-to-day life.

Seperation anxiety is a recurrent type of anxiety. It typically occurs over a time frame of about four weeks, at the least. A young person suffering from seperation anxiety often feels an enormous amount of worry, fear, or severe distress that causes them to become impaired from leading a normal life. This distress may take on one or more of the various forms: headache, stomachache, rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, and sweatiness.

Through research that has been conducted, doctors have been able to deduce that children that have a great amount of anxiety and are extremely fearful early in their lives often develop harder-to-treat anxiety disorders. For example, when a young child attends school for the first time, he or she may develop an anxiety from being seperated from a primary caregiver. If the anxiety does not go away within the first few weeks of the child attending school, and gets much worse as time passes, a severe anxiety problem is evident. This problem can effect the child doing well in school, making friends, and adjusting to life in general. A child with severe separation anxiety often has a very hard time controlling his or her emotions.

Children with separation anxiety often have a variety of symptoms. They may have a persistant worry about the well-being and safety of their loved ones. They may also show a large amount of sadness or dismay when separated from their primary caregiver. They may fall asleep easily if they are not around their primary caregiver. They may experience frightening nightmares in which they are separaed from the ones that they love. They may feel homesick, experience headaches, nausea, stomachaches, lightheadedness, dizziness, cramps, irregular heartbeats, muscle aches, and even vomiting.

Separation anxiety can be treated in a variety of ways. If the separation anxiety is not very severe, it can be treated with a little bit of therapy from a certified mental health professional. However, if the separation anxiety is very severe, the child may need to seek therapy as well as anti-anxiety medications. These medications can come in the form of SSRI’s (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) or MAOI’s (monoamine oxidase inhibitors). SSRI’s are a newer type of antidepressants that have very few side effects, while MAOI’s are older and have more side effects. What type of medication a child needs depends upon their individual case and body chemistry. Only a doctor in the field can determine what is best to take.

It usually happens the night before a very important day – it could be the day when you will have a exquisite date; it could be the day when you will have a very important meeting; it could also be the day when it is the beginning of school.

You’re right on your bed tossing and turning trying to get to sleep. You can feel the rapid heartbeat rate, you felt the hot-flushes at the back of your body. It is the horrendous symptoms of a panic-attack or anxiety. Fret not, I will be sharing you a technique to help you fall asleep.

Keep this in mind: if you’re unable to sleep, it is OK. Don’t blame yourself or start thinking what the worst might happen. Do you know that the record for the longest period without sleep is nearly 19 days? Yes, it is true. So do not worry! Ok, now here is the technique:

Have you ever realized that during those situation, you tend to be very alert to the surroundings you’re at? You can hear even the slightest sound! So here’s a tip: lie on one of your ears on one of the pillows and take another pillow to cover your the other ear. If you have only one pillow, then lie one of your ears on the bed and take the other pillow to cover the other ear. This helps to reduce the ‘noise’ around you.

Clear all thoughts that are currently in your mind. Whatever thoughts it would be – positive or negative – clear it.

Now release all the tension on your muscles – your legs, arms, neck, eyes, mouth and other parts of your body – let it all go.

Perform deep breathing – inhale deeply at an average speed, exhale slowly as if there is a candle in front of your nose and you’re trying not to blow the flame of the candle off. As you do so, listen to your heartbeat and try to make it palpitate slower than before.

Then now trying to visualize you’re in a relaxing scene. For an example: you’re on a tropical island. The ocean is clean and you’re able to see beautiful fishes swimming in it. You are holding hands with the person you love, walking on the warm, crispy sands. The coconut trees are swaying gently. The sounds of the ocean splashing on the shores. You sip a glass of chilled white wine as you are walking with your love one.

Do you get what I mean now? Visualize those lovely, relaxing scenes in your mind!

It’s called Somatic Experiencing (SE) and it’s the amazing work of Peter A. Levine, Ph.D. This will be the first in a series of two articles. Here we’ll have a look at SE within the context of a contributor to panic and anxiety. The article that follows will approach SE from a treatment perspective. Well, tune-in because I know you’re going to find the information fascinating, hopeful, and helpful.

SE came to life as Dr. Levine observed that though wild animals of prey are under constant threat and siege, they’re rarely traumatized. Well, I never really gave that much thought, but I suppose it’s true. So, just how in the heck do they pull that off? Well, credit is given to an innate regulating mechanism that very efficiently manages and discharges the energy that accumulates in their bodies as a result of self-preservation behaviors. Levine observed that when an animal of prey survives a potentially deadly chase, it actually takes time to physically shake-off unused energy before moving on with the herd. Well, Levine posits we humans are equipped with essentially the same mechanism; however, ours is greatly inhibited by our more advanced cognitive capabilities. Man, how many times does thinking mess things up for us? By the way, isn’t it interesting that we so often use the phrase, “Just shake it off,” when someone takes a relatively minor hit of some kind.

Now, as we consider the notion that humans have an innate ability to manage and discharge unused survival energy, let’s take a look at a large structure in the midbrain known as the periaqueductal gray (PG). The PG is thought to be involved with physically defensive reactions such as freezing, jumping, running, rapid heartbeat, blood pressure fluctuation, and increases in muscle tone. It’s believed that when sufficiently stimulated, the amygdala, our fear alarm control panel, rings-up the PG and on come one or more of the physical phenomena just mentioned.

Interestingly enough, the PG is also responsible for something known as quiescence, a state of being at ease and immobile, yet highly alert. Many scientists believe this is a natural recovery response after a tussle with a real or perceived threat. Did you ever feel like you were frozen or immobile during a time of intense fear or anxiety? Come on, you know you have. In humans, indeed all mammals and reptiles, freezing usually occurs right before the real or perceived attack. It’s one of three primary responses called upon when we’re faced with a perceived overwhelming threat, the others being fight and flight. Well, this altered state of consciousness is designed to provide a last ditch shot at escape and to spare the body pain through a natural analgesic process should a brutal death occur. And guess what? The PG is responsible for this onboard pain relief, as well.

Now, this inability to “shake-off” causes big problems because it prohibits a complete purging, if you will, of excess survival energy. And this, in turn, impedes the nervous system’s efforts to regain a sense of internal balance or homeostasis. And that, in yet another turn, leads to trauma because the body now has to try to accommodate an excess of unused survival energy. And this “has-been” mass of energy remains bound in our bodies where it rips us up mentally, emotionally, and physically. Again, we humans have the ability to shake-off this toxic mess; however, we generally find a way to think our way out of it.

Well, it sure doesn’t seem like much of a stretch to me that this storehouse of poisonous unused survival energy would have the potential to generate all sorts of panic and anxiety. And that’s what makes this material so relevant. So, keep this information in your back pocket as you read the next article discussing SE from a treatment perspective.

Thankfully, with a few preventive measures, you can prevent panic attacks in children.

If your child has suffered a panic attack, the anxiety associated with his episode is enough to fuel the kind of irrational fear that triggers more panic attacks. This can have adverse effects on a child’s emotional health, leaving him paralyzed with anxiety. Eventually, the child can suffer from low self-esteem, depression, and he may even have suicidal thoughts.

Psychotherapy can be a very effective way to prevent panic attacks in children. A trained psychotherapist will work with your child to identify the triggers of the panic attacks, and then develop a gradual plan to empower him to release the fears that contribute to these attacks. By sharing pertinent information with the therapist about your child’s behavior, and implementing the therapist’s suggested behavioral modification methods, you play a vital role in your child’s success.

Meditation and deep breathing exercises can prevent panic attacks in children by giving them the tools they need to manage anxiety and relax. Physical activity is not only beneficial for the body, 60-minutes of daily moderate physical activity releases a plethora of “feel good” hormones that can reduce anxiety and contribute to a child’s overall sense of well-being.

If panic attacks in youngsters are not addressed immediately, the condition can easily spiral out of control. A combination of behavioral therapy, deep breathing techniques, daily physical activity, and plenty of love and support can prevent panic attacks in children, and keep them from living their lives in constant fear.

The symptoms include feeling like you are having a seizure, twitches, jitters or other involuntary movements. Some may even experience internal temperature changes, either having chills or hot flashes.

The signs of an impending panic attack can include the following: tremendous waves of fear, rapid heartbeat and increase in breathing rate. A fully fledged panic attack (within 1-2 minutes after the initial signs) will amplify the above symptoms, you chest starts to hurt, you are finding it difficult to breathe, you start feel dizzy and you sense that something terrible is about to happen and you are powerless against it.

Despite the uncomfortable sensations, you need to understand that panic attack is not an illness, it is a behavioral condition. Therefore, you cannot die or even be harmed by these symptoms. In fact, they are nothing more than your body’s natural reaction during periods of high anxiety. They are disturbing, painful and terrifying – but harmless!

The downside of these symptoms is that your body will feel tired and fatigue after the end of your panic episode. You may continue to feel muscles tension and stiffness in your chest, neck and shoulders. Your chest may continue to feel tight and you continue to be short of breath.

However, do not let panic attacks get the better of you and let it rule over your life. Most sufferers can be so traumatized by the incident that they start avoiding places of situation which they “think” or “feel” might trigger their panic attacks. This is a wrong approach as it will not stop your panic attacks in the slightest bit, as a matter of fact, it only serves to reinforce your fears and make you more susceptible to another panic attack.

In essence, remember that anxiety and panic attacks are nothing more than your body’s natural panic reaction. You are supposed to feel and react this way when you are in danger – it needs to be there. Panic attack is just a confused bodily sensation, there is no visible danger but your brain perceived otherwise and sends out a wrong signal – a mistake. Do not reinforce and continue to repeat that mistake by exaggerating the symptoms into MAJOR significance.

Left untreated, sufferers can become traumatized by their experiences and may develop certain level of fear and phobia. They may hesitate to venture into public and become easily agitated and nervous.

In order to overcome your panic attacks you need to understand what is going on with your body. Many panic attack sufferers are dead convinced that something is wrong with them and they are going to die. This is false! Panic attacks will NEVER cause you to die or cause you to develop some unknown physical illness. This is the most important fact that you have to understand as a full recovery would not be possible if you still believe that something bad is happening to you. You need to stop pin-pointing a reason and cause for your symptoms – because there is none – there is only panic attack.

One way to deal with panic attacks is to try and focus on positive, rationale thoughts. Thoughts like “I feel like fainting”, “I am having a heart attack”, “I am going to lose control” does not help at all. Instead, they will only serve to worsen the panic symptoms. Put a stop to these thoughts and replace them with positive, rationale thoughts such as “These feelings are uncomfortable, but they won’t last forever”, “It is not a heart attack, it is just panic attack, I will be fine”, etc.

Do not be disheartened if you are finding it difficult to concentrate on these calming thoughts. This is a form of mental conditioning; as you keep practicing and trying, your brain with eventually accept these positive statements and you will find it easier to calm down.

It started with a tingling sensation in your chest…gradually, your chest muscles starts to tighten and it becomes more and more painful with each passing minute. You also notice that you heart is beating faster and faster and you can actually “feel it” thumping madly against your chest. The immediate thought of “heart attack” or “stroke” flashes into your mind…as you start feeling light-headed and numb, you begin to believe that you are indeed suffering from heart attack…or is it?

One of the most worrying symptoms of panic attack is heart palpitations and this can often lead to the assumption of “heart attack”, something which you would not want to associate yourself with. It is easy to mistake both of them as they share several common symptoms. However, there is a clear difference between panic attack and a heart attack.

In a real heart attack, sufferers will experience a crushing sensation inside the chest and this pain is continuous. In fact, you DO NOT hear your heart beating during a heart attack, nor do you care – the crushing pain is the only thing you can feel. For panic attacks, you can actually feel the rapid heartbeat, in addition to other worrying symptoms. You are never in any real danger during a panic attack, you are just panicking.

The surest way is of course to go for a medical examination and request for electrocardiogram and blood tests. If you have been to the emergency room before and the doctor has given you an all clear cardiac wise – believe him. The thing about heart attack is that you CANNOT have one without an existing heart condition or disease – it a fact. Panic attack CANNOT and WILL NOT cause a heart disease or heart attack. In fact, studies have shown that panic attacks affect the heart similar to the way cardio exercise does. Therefore, do not be alarmed if you suffer from chest pains during a panic attack. If it is related to anxiety and panic, such pain will subside eventually and will never harm you.
