Wouldn’t we all love to go back to our childhood at Christmas? The excitement and anticipation of Christmas, the gifts Santa will bring and the eating of goodies not always allowed during the year. For adults however, Christmas can be a time of stress and anything but jolly. And too much stress can lead to us experiencing panic attack symptoms.

Can we afford the bikes the kids want? How can we attend the children’s nativity play and the work function on the same night? You love the in-laws but just how long are they going to stay? There’s not enough time…..

Rushed buying can mean that you end up with gifts and food that you can’t really afford. Presents means credit card payments and extra debt. Celebrating comes to mean laboring in the kitchen over a hot stove.

While a certain amount of stress can be helpful by challenging us and keeping us motivated too much can lead to a panic attack. This is when the body feels under threat and goes into fight or flight mode and can be triggered by something as simple as a phone call at the wrong time. Symptoms may include increased heart rate, rapid breathing, tense muscles and hypertension. Emotions may be piqued and include irritability, anger, losing your temper, yelling and lack of concentration.

If you suffer from a panic attack try to calm yourself by stopping what you are doing, drop your shoulders, breathe out and stop for about 10 seconds, then normal breathing in for a count of three and out for a count of four.

Planning is vital at Christmas. Make yourself a list and check it more than twice. List what must be done and what you would like to, do but is not essential. Make sure you do the important things first – shopping and meal planning. Get someone else to do the things you don’t enjoy so much and share the load.

Make sure you take care of yourself by getting some regular exercise, eat fresh fruit, take a long bath and ‘don’t burn the candle at both ends’. Try to get some relaxation each day until Christmas and when the day comes around enjoy the moment, hopefully free of any panic attack symptoms.

Unlike adults they have yet to develop the maturity required to even begin to cope with them. We know how disturbing these attacks can be to an adult. How much more frightening must they be to our young? Children need as much understanding and help from their parents as they can get, and finding a treatment for the young can often be difficult.

Panic Attacks in Children: To be able to assist your child you need to be able to recognize the triggers of an attack and develop a response that the child can learn so that, over time, they can build a strategy that works for them. Look for signs like trembling, shortness of breath, rapid breathing, dizziness and feeling feint. Any of these may be a sign that your child is suffering from irrational and unprovoked fears that cause panic attacks.

Finding A Treatment: The key to helping your child is in early recognition. If you can spot the onset of an attack early enough then a mix of comfort and distraction will help. The greatest source of comfort for your child is most likely to be the security of a parent’s love. Combine that with effective distraction of your child’s attention toward something that you know triggers happy secure feelings.

Panic attacks in children will likely result in a decline in the child’s school performance, and possibly avoidance of school altogether and fear of separation from parents or being away from the safety of home, as well as substance abuse, depression and even suicidal thoughts. If you feel your childs panic attacks a severe or maybe unusual your first course of action naturaly is to visit your general practitioner. Finding a treatment that is suitable for your child does not always have to involve the use of anti anxiety medication. Today the option of many of the natural products availabe are proving to be very effective in the treatment of panic attacks in children.

Treating panic attacks is often a confusing subject for most people, and most people I speak to don’t seem to know how to even begin going about treating their panic attacks. Knowing how to treat panic attacks is much more easily accomplished once you know what causes a panic attack.

What causes panic attacks in the first place?

Normally, your brain is in normal rational mode. You are able to think logically and are in complete control of body movements, functions and your thoughts. However, sometimes the brain can completely shift into a panic state which causes you to lose conscious control over a lot of thought processes and bodily functions.

This is when you develop an irrational sense of fear, sweats, rapid breathing and tightness in the throat. All of these are direct consequences of the brain entering panic state.

How to treat panic attacks effectively and quickly

Now that you know what causes a panic attack and what it is, it is now much simpler to treat it – i.e. the best treatment is to try and stop the brain from entering panic state in the first place.

This means forgetting about a lot of the over the counter medications, as these just treat the symptoms of an attack once it is already in full swing. Now whilst this may work and will get your breathing back under control again (eventually), it won’t stop the attack from happening in the first place.

However, there are a few treatments available the do actually help to keep you calm and to prevent your brain from entering panic state. Having this kind of treatment is much better for you in the long run and will help you on the path to living a life free from panic attacks (plus they are usually much cheaper than prescribed medications!)

Now, this may be because either they don’t think that cures/treatments work and so don’t bother with them, or they don’t even realize that they are having a panic attack in the first place.
How to easily recognize a panic attack

There are many symptoms of anxiety panic attacks, but some of the main ones are:

- Rapid breathing – Feeling breathless – Shakes – Dizziness – Feeling sick – Increased state of fear/adrenalin

If you can recognize a few of these symptoms, then you are having a panic attack my friend. Don’t worry though, now that you can recognize an attack it will be much more easily treatable because you will be able to treat it much sooner and thus stop it from reaching it’s peak.

However, it doesn’t even need to be this way and you can actually stop the attack from happening in the first place! How? By realising that a panic attack occurs because the brain changes its mental state into panic mode – if you can stop this happening then your attack won’t happen at all, it’s that simple.

How to stop a panic attack from happening in the first place

Firstly, you will need a treatment for your anxiety panic attacks, but forget most of the over the counter ones as these just focus on relieving the symptoms and controlling your breathing pattern again, which is no good for stopping attacks from happening as they only work once an attack is in full flow.

What you need is one of the few treatments that focuses on preventing your brain from entering panic state during the very early symptoms of a forthcoming attack, thus stopping it dead in it’s tracks and helping you towards a life free of anxiety panic attacks for good.

The thought that you are going to die very soon during a panic attack can be extremely frightening and is best understood only by those who have experienced one. Add this together with everything else that is going on such as shaking, chest pains, rapid breathing, a chest pounding heartbeat and dizziness and, well, you know what I’m talking about.

Although panic attacks generally do just come out of nowhere and make you physically feel like you’ve been kicked around a football pitch afterwards, below are some tips for panic attacks that will hopefully makes things easier when an one occurs;

ACKNOWLEDGE AND ACCEPT – When you can feel an attack coming on and revving up its engines, recognise and accept that this is happening and do not try and fight against it. Doing this will help you to keep a calm head and not give your feeling of panic a helping hand.

BREATHING – Take long slow breaths in, hold for a few seconds and then breathe out slowly and hold. Repeating this in a steady rhythm will regulate your breathing and hopefully calm things down. Closing your eyes or breathing into a paper bag may help even more.

TALKING – A method that does work for me personally is to talk to somebody about what is happening. This pushes my negative thoughts away from myself and focuses my thoughts on what I am saying to the other person.

DISTRACTION – As above but with using an object to focus on. Concentrating on a ticking clock or something similar personally helps me to focus my attention elsewhere.

Hopefully the above tips for panic attacks will help to ease your experiences as they have done for me.

If you have tried and failed to stop panic attacks and the regular misery they bring by using self help methods such as above then you may need extra help from other experts. Begin your journey of wiping away panic attacks for good at http://www.anxiety-and-panic-gone.com

For a lot of people, this is a burning questions that instills fear into all who are unfortunate enough to suffer from panic Continue reading

Can Panic Attacks Last For Days – Just How Long Do Panic Attacks Last For?

For a lot of people, this is a burning questions that instills fear into all who are unfortunate enough to suffer from panic attacks – just how long do they last for? Can panic attacks last for days?

I guess there is nothing worse than not knowing if this horrible, unpleasant thing is going to last days instead of just mere minutes or hours. Hopefully this article will help to clear things up for you.

Can panic attacks last for days?

In a word, no they can’t. Phew, that’s a big relief!

Why?

Because the very definition of a panic attacks is just that, it is a sudden, intense attack that grips hold of you and shakes you about whilst it lasts. But the duration of actual panic attacks is usually mere minutes, and in some cases up to an hour but usually no more and anything over this is rare and not common at all.

I believe the confusion started because people can suffer prolonged anxiety and stress for days at a time, but this is not a panic or anxiety attack. This is a less intense but prolonged state of anxiety and is completely different from sudden, intense panic/anxiety attacks. So can panic attacks last for days? No is the answer.

How can I shorten the duration of a panic attack?

Another common question I get asked a lot this one. Fortunately there are things you can do to really help you.

Firstly, forget over the counter medication because although this does work, it will only work once a panic attack is already in full swing and will help to bring your rapid breathing back under control and return you to normal state again.

However, these can be quite expensive and won’t stop attacks from happening in the first place. Fortunately, there are a few great treatments available that actually help stop panic attacks from happening in the first place, these will really help to give you a life free from panic attacks (and won’t break the bank either!)

There are a variety of different symptoms associated with a panic attack with the most common being a racing heartbeat and intense feelings of fear. Usually these panic attacks can last anywhere from a few minutes to hours. Sometimes panic attacks will result when your mind detects an immediate danger or they can also result without warning.

The main symptoms of a panic attack include:

Racing heartbeat

Shortness of breath

Intense fear (Usually a fear of dying or a fear of losing your mind)

Trembling or shaking

Dizziness (Usually caused by rapid breathing)

Feelings of not being in reality

Panic attacks can regularly affect children more than an adult because a child is less adept at handling the symptoms compared to an adult. An adult has an easier time grasping the fact that panic attacks are normally not life threatening then compared to a child’s view of panic attacks and the symptoms that cause them to be desperately afraid.

Panic attacks often runs in families and if not treated can cause serious complications in a child’s life. Panic attacks can affect a child’s relationships with family and other students at school and result in poor grades and overall poor development.

When a child expects recurring panic attacks often times they will develop and live in a constant state of fear or anxious feeling because they expect another panic attack to occur. In severe situations they will be afraid to leave home or avoid certain places. This type of condition is known as agoraphobia and is not uncommon with children that experience panic attacks regularly.

Another thing to look for if a child is experiencing chronic panic attacks is turning to substance abuse. Early treatment is important to help avoid a child developing severe changes in their lifestyle such as substance abuse, agoraphobia, suicidal behavior and severe cases of depression.
