Unless you know the facts, you may mistake the chest pains that normally accompany panic attacks for a heart attack.

Every year, thousands of people having chest pain, difficulty breathing, pain or numbness in the left arm and tingling throughout the body end up in a hospital emergency room because they believe they are having a heart attack. Typically, a few tests are run, and the patient is sent home because the nature of the attack he or she experienced is one of panic, not coronary.

It’s easy to understand how a panic attack can be mistaken for a heart attack; the two share several common symptoms-with subtle, but recognizable differences. For instance, the chest pain from a heart attack is focused in the center of the chest and is crushing, as if a heavy weight is sitting on top of the chest. It is usually persistent, may radiate to the left arm, neck or back and lasts longer than 5 – 10 minutes. Heart attack victims don’t hyperventilate (unless the person’s fear of heart attack triggers a panic attack), any tingling they experience is usually confined to the left arm, and vomiting is common.

During a panic attack, chest pain is localized over the heart and described as “sharp, and comes and goes. The pain usually intensifies with breathing in and out, and pressing on the center of the chest. Panic attack may cause nausea, but vomiting is rare, and if tingling is present, the entire body tingles. Hyperventilation almost always precedes a panic attack. Using deep breathing techniques dispel this and combined with relaxation exercises, other panic attack symptoms disappear in less than 5 minutes. If the location of the pain moves to the center of the chest, doesn’t go away within 10 minutes, is accompanied by more than one incident of vomiting or diarrhea, or goes away and returns a few minutes later, you should immediately get medical attention.

Panic attacks don’t cause heart disease, and some experts say that they actually affect the heart similarly to the way cardio exercise does, by causing the release of adrenaline, increasing the heart rate, and expanding blood vessels. On the same note, heart disease doesn’t cause panic attacks, although a person with a history of panic attacks who is actually having a coronary may also panic for fear of worsening the heart damage, dying or being disabled.

Using the correct techniques and exercises, you can learn to control panic attack symptoms. I’m one of those with anxiety/panic disorders who have benefited from these practices. I’ve learned to overcome the symptoms of panic attack and differentiate them from heart attack symptoms. It takes practice to control panic attack symptoms, but if you learn to recognize the difference between panic and heart attack signs, and you know that what you’re experiencing is only a panic attack, they’ll be much easier to deal with.

If you want to learn more about heart attacks and how to deal with panic attacks, there is a great amount of information on the Internet. Learning the difference between the two kinds of symptoms makes all the difference in how you react to panic attacks!

Did you know that every 8 seconds someone in the US has a panic attack? True! And sometimes I’m one of them! How about you?

I’ve had panic attacks that have lasted 30 minutes, and was absolutely certain I was having a heart attack! I couldn’t breathe, I had chest and neck pains, my left arm hurt, yet at the same time was numb; how weird is that?. Although I still feel the symptoms of panic attack coming on, from time to time, I’ve learned how to take control of my thoughts and reactions, and have changed my lifestyle to drastically decrease the chances of panic attack.
For people who suffer from panic attacks, or any form of this, there is panic therapy available to them. Also called Panic Disorder, many people suffer from this to varying degrees. Depending on how serious your panic attacks are, you will find something that fits each level of seriousness. Healthcare professionals who treat this disorder fully believe that each person can experience a complete recovery from the symptoms.

The very first step in recovering from panic disorder is the diagnosis. You can’t treat something if you don’t know what it is. Once the diagnosis is made, the appropriate panic therapy can be started. It takes dedication and self discipline for treatment to have the desired effect.

A popular method of treatment for Panic Disorder follows a 6 step plan. The steps are as follows:

1. Education: In order to overcome your panic attacks, it is important that you understand just what they are and what can trigger them. Many times just having an understanding of what is going on can be the biggest help of all.

2. Physical: There are some things you can do for yourself in the physical sense that can calm and balance your body during panic therapy. These include aerobic exercise, a healthy diet, a warm bath, and possibly a soothing tea such as chamomile.

3. Meditation: This includes any method of relaxation that calms you, whether it is actual meditation, prayer, visual techniques, or relaxation techniques.

4. Cognitive-behavioral therapy or CBT: This is the only form of panic therapy that is widely proved as effective for panic disorder. It has been studied by many top university researchers and its effectiveness is well documented. CBT teaches ways to handle panic attacks.

5. Medication: Finding the right form and dosage of medication can make all the difference in the world when it comes to panic therapy.

6. Big Life Issues: This is the process of identifying and healing from life issues that are related to your panic attacks.

This 6 step program to controlling panic attacks has proved to work for many people who suffer from this often debilitating disorder. Of course, working with a professional can make the entire process easier and faster in succeeding. Someone who battles the threat of panic attacks on a daily basis will welcome the knowledge that there IS help in the form of panic therapy, and that is DOES work.

Fortunately, this is a well researched topic and there are many options available that can fight anxiety and depression at the same time. Many factors have been identified that will trigger a panic attack and there are always some very obvious and tell-tale signs when one is about to happen.

Your ability to read these signs as early as possible is the best tool to preventing and counteracting them. Once you have trained yourself to recognize the signs that indicate that the onset of a panic attack is just about to happen, you can move on to identify and learn about remedies for these.

The most important remedy while fighting against a panic disorder is to take action. Do not wait for it to wash over you; do not wait to pit your strength against it and measure your will power against the storm that is created by an anxiety panic attack. The best way to fight it is to prevent it.

Traumatic as it is, a few simple steps at the onset of an attack can help you tremendously. Most experts would say that you should not brace yourself against it, but rather roll with the wave. In this way, the attack will come and go, and you will not feel devastated the next day.

A little out of the way, but well recommended by doctors, is the effort to improve self esteem, which, it seems, is directly connected with depression anxiety. Depression in turn, happens when your self-expectations are thwarted by your abilities.

The timing is very important, so you should be careful when one is taking over your self-control. You need to know that basically all panic disorders are the result of some mismatch between who you think you are and how others perceive you.

Panic disorders are the result of a mental disease, and can turn regular, day-to-day problems into mammoth fears and anxiety attacks if left untreated. These attacks are tremendously traumatic since they are disproportionate to reality and therefore, it becomes difficult for you to defend yourself against it.

Health experts advise that the only things that can control such attacks are strong will power, appropriate medicines and timely action. All these initiatives should be applied at the same time in the correct order and intensity to provide you with relief.

Unfortunately it took me nearly 30 years to get in tune with my body before I came to realize that certain foods that I ate would either cause me to have a panic attack or reduce the frequency and duration of them.

What you need to know is that these foods can also affect your panic attacks as well.

In this article I will be sharing with you the foods that you should strongly consider including in your diet for preventive maintenance.

By understanding the basics of why you need these foods you will be better prepared for what to look for and add to your diet.

B-Complex has been known to reduce stress levels and keep your neurotransmitters happy. You can incorporate B-Complex into your diet through natural foods or through a high potency multi vitamins with natural herbs.

Chronic stress, smoking, typical poor diet, alcohol, and doctor prescribed drugs can quickly deplete B vitamins from your body.

So you need to be sure to eat foods high in B-Complex. What you want to look for are the dark green vegetable and whole grain foods to incorporate into your diet. For the dark green foods you want to eat Broccoli, green beans, sea weed, spinach, kale, hydrilla, and other green foods.

The whole grain foods that you should eat are whole grain pasta, barley, whole-grain cereal, oatmeal, brown rice as well as other whole grain foods.

By eating these foods high in B-Complex you can dramatically reduce the number of panic attacks or prevent a possible attack while your under stressful time periods in your life.

However keep in mind that eating healthy is only part of the equation when it comes to panic attacks. There are also typically deeply rooted issues that can also contribute to your anxiety and panic disorder and if you do not learn how to properly deal with those, only half your battle is won.

What you should consider strongly before you decide to see a doctor to get a prescription of medicine is to try to understand why your having panic attacks in the first place.

There is often a deeply rooted reason for your anxiety and panic attacks. It could be caused by PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) from a traumatic experience you had, it could be hereditary, it could be induced by a terrifying recent experience, or stressful situation.

Whatever your case may be, there are some people who have some severe bouts of panic attacks that it becomes a daily fear that completely consumes their lives and they can not go to work, take care of their kids, or do simple things like go shopping. (This is what happened to me when I was a teen)

In these cases sometimes its necessary to quickly get the person with the panic disorder on some panic attack medication to a reasonable level of quality life before researching further to work on preventative maintenance so they do not lapse into panic attacks on a daily or weekly basis.

Unfortunately for some people with this disorder they can’t even go out in public to see a doctor without being fearful they will lapse. Also many people like myself are scared to death of doctors and just the mere thought of being at a hospital or doctors office makes them have a panic attack. Although I do not get panic attacks anymore the doctors visit does get my mind working a little.

The biggest concern you need to be aware of with taking medication for your panic attacks is that it will only mask the root cause. You may get temporary relief but it can soon be followed by side affects which can cause you to have another panic attack.

What is the biggest cause of panic attacks? Its fear! So we have adapted a keen sense of our own mind to try to be in full control of our thought process at all times because once we start to feel the slightest bit of something else is controlling or fogging our mind it freaks us out.

Example: you go to the dentist to get cavities filled and they give you gas to “calm” you. Does this really calm people with panic attacks? No, it sends us over the edge!

I’ve suffered from severe panic attacks for nearly 30 years. Stop living in fear like I was. Get my free tips that can stop your panic attacks forever without Panic Attack Medication. Go to my blog How to Stop Panic Attacks.

People experiencing panic attacks usually have symptoms ranging from nervousness, increased heart rate, social phobia, dizziness, lack of sleep, feeling of having a heart attack etc.

Causes of Panic Attacks:

It is important to understand that panic attacks or panic disorders are not a physical ailment. A lot of people confuse this to be something wrong with their body and start taking treatments and medications.

Every one has certain levels of anxiety in their day to day functioning. It is when these anxiety levels soar beyond acceptable levels that it results in panic attacks. Anxiety is a natural phenomenon that is meant to protect us from possible dangers. It is our survival mechanism which triggers the fight/flight stimulation and sends that adrenaline rush. Unfortunately, sometimes due to our past experiences and the way we have related to things and situations, our mind tends to perceive a relatively harmless situation to be a potential danger and thus triggers the physical sensations like increased heart rate etc.

A lot of people resort to medications and drugs to get treatment for their panic attacks. Unfortunately, this is a wrong method as drugs can only give temporary relief from the physical symptoms and does nothing to treat the root cause of panic attacks or its prevention in future. Further, it leads to severe addiction and causes more anxiety and panic in a long term than the actual panic attack itself.

The first step in treating a panic attack is the understanding that it is caused by the mind and that the panic attacks are not a physical ailment. Now, you need to treat the root cause of this treatment by meeting anxiety and panic attack in its tracks instead of delving on the symptoms and always playing catch.

The right way to cure panic attacks is to meet anxiety at its tracks and not give in to it by treating the symptoms. Joe Barry teaches a method called One Move method, which when applied will put you on course of getting rid of panic attacks forever in quick time without any medication.

Let my tell you 4 “Whats” and a “How” to help you out.

What is a panic attack?

Panic attack is an overwhelming feeling of fear and anxiety about something real or imaginative. It makes you feel likes dying or unable to breathe as normal. Many people suffer from panic attacks without any apparent reason. Panic attack may either happen only once or it recurs whenever you come to a situation or circumstance that will cause it to exploit instantly. Places likes subway, air plane, bus and places where there is no easy mean of escape or help is not readily available are the common places to trigger a panic attack. If the situation persists, you may develop into agoraphobia and panic disorder. You shouldn’t avoid panic attack but learn how to deal with it instead.

Who gets panic attacks?

About one out of ten persons suffers from panic attack. Nevertheless, most of them are either undiagnosed or under diagnosed. If you are living under pressure for prolong period then you prone to have panic attack. Anyone may suffer from panic attack or panic disorder and children may also be the victim too. Female has twice the chances to have panic attack as opposed to male. You may also be biological inherited with panic attack.

How do I know if I am having an attack?

Fear of dying, strange wrapping reality, racing heartbeat, sweating, choking sensation, stomach cramp, going insane, cool flashes are the common symptoms of panic attack which is similar to anxiety. The physical symptoms suffered by each person may be slightly different and also much more depending on the situation.

Some symptoms of panic attacks are similar to a heart attack. As such knowing your real problem is very critical as panic attack is harmless but the heart attack can be deadly. You should seek help from medical doctor as soon as after you had panic attack for the first time.

What cause an attack?

Most of the panic attacks crop up without any warning and they just happen out of the blue. However, past traumatic experiences likes death of a loved one, family conflicts, bad relationships, parents get divorced, road accident and etc have been linked to the causes of having the attacks. You may have the attack whenever you are exposed to a circumstances or events almost similar to the past that caused you to have an attack. Besides, stress is another contributing factor for panic attack.

What should I do during an attack?

Although panic attacks normally last from 5 to 10 minutes but they may rule your entire life. You are basically going through signs and symptoms as described above and the attack makes you feel very miserable. It is very important to control your breathing during an attack as speeding heartbeat is the root cause for other symptoms. You should do diaphragmatic breathing and institute a pause in between inhaling and exhaling at a constant rhythm. In the nutshell, place one hand on your upper chest whilst the another hand on your stomach, count one to three when you breathe in, pause, and count one to three when you breathe out.

Continue to repeat this step several times until you can calm down. You may want to walk around slowly if you are able to stand up. Another useful tip is, you may want to breathe into a plastic or paper bag. Doing this would help you to re-breathe your carbon dioxide to correct your blood acid level.

The key objective of doing above is to help you to focus on your breathing whilst preventing your mind to think about the causes of the panic which would worsen your situation. Some of the proven techniques that could help you to divert your attention are, thinking more about happy memories, playing some word games or solving puzzle.

Your first panic attack should be a learning experience that will help you control attacks in the future. Sometimes people with a panic attack go to the emergency room thinking they are having a heart attack as the symptoms are similar and come on suddenly. You’ll feel things like sudden periods of extreme fear, anxiety, shortness of breath, dizziness, trembling, rapid heart beat, hyperventilation, tingling sensation, nausea, etc. When they learn that it was a panic attack and knowing the difference they can start taking control of their future attacks. This is important because often a panic attack will keep you from even functioning.

Panic attacks are caused by many physical, mental and emotional triggers. Genetics may play a part and females are more apt to get them than men. Allergies or sensitivities to food, drink or chemicals can trigger an attack along with memories or trauma. Alcohol and drug can also cause panic attacks and disorders. Serious and upsetting experiences along with everyday events could trigger an attack.

Panic disorder may lead to “situational avoidance,” where the sufferer feels they have to avoid every place or situation in where attack has occurred and might not even leave their house which could be a very serious disruption to a normal life.

Control subjects were less likely to have panic attacks then patients with panic disorders after both drank a high amount of caffeine, according to results of a small study by Isabella Nascimento, MD, and colleagues at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil.

People who had went to a doctor for treatment told me that they were usually told they should avoid caffeine in colas, coffee, chocolate and tea.

I’ve talked with several people who gave me the following natural treatments they have used to cure or avoid panic attacks without using medicine.

Deep Breathing

One of the best forms of panic attack relief is to simply take deep, slow breaths to prevent hyperventilation. By getting hyperventilation under control you avoid things such as the dizziness and lightheadedness which happens because there is too much oxygen being taken to the brain at one time.

Exercise

This appears to be a one of the best ways of dealing with a panic attack once it’s started. An adrenaline rush usually accompanies an attack and the exercise can bleed it off according to people who use it.

Aroma therapy

After listening to a number of people talk about using aroma therapy to combat panic attacks it appears there are two schools of thought. The first swears by using smells that bring back pleasant memories, such as baby powder, certain flowers, farm animals or barbecuing. The others said that aromas from essential oils or candles were the best.

Meditation

This is a way that several people said helped them from having attacks or by being able to stop them once they started.

Think happy thoughts or take your mind off your problem

Others told me that once an attack started they tried to empty their mind of anything but pleasant things that they had done in the past and it appeared to help them. They also said taking your mind off the attack with things like counting backwards from one hundred was helpful.

The above ways are used by ordinary people to cure or get over a panic attack. In some cases they just can’t do it themselves and need professional help. Below is some information on several different natural methods used to cure people with panic disorders.

Getting Professional Help

Hypnosis

DianeUlicsni, director of The Hypnosis Center in Lake Oswego, Ore., suffered from chronic panic attacks for many years. She finally found relief through hypnosis and is now a board certified hypnotherapist. She says that hypnosis — recognized by the American Medical Association since 1958 as a form of treatment — is one approach that is non-drug and can greatly ease or even cure panic attacks.

Laugh your panic attacks away?

That’s a good strategy, says Steven Sutanoff, PHD, a clinical psychologist in Irvine, Calif., and past president of the American Association for Therapeutic Humor. He uses humor visualization with his panic attack patients, telling them to imagine themselves in a situation where they’ve laughed uncontrollably. When they have a panic situation, they are able to return to the picture of themselves laughing.

Cognitive Behavorial Therapy

James D. Herbert, PHD, associate professor of clinical psychology at MCP Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, says that cognitive behavioral therapy is his choice for treating panic disorders. Cognitive-behavior therapy is made up of two parts: One is to identify and modify the thinking patterns that produces anxiety (cognitive therapy), and lessening anxiety by exposing the patient to fearful scenarios (behavior therapy).

If you suffer from panic attacks try some of the treatments listed above. They have worked for people I talked with and maybe they’ll work for you too.

When it comes to panic attack, people usually tend to wonder what triggers it. Experts believe that there are two different types of stimuli that results in this condition, namely: internal and external stimuli.

1) Internal stimuli include the following:

a)	Emotions

b)	Thoughts

c)	Bodily sensation such as a skipped heart beat or a stomach acne.

2) External stimuli include the following present in the environment:

a)	A smell

b)	A funny taste in the mouth

c)	A change in lighting

d)	A change in temperature inside the room

e)	Noise

f)	Changes in the manner things sound usually.

It is quite possible for a person with panic disorder to recognize these factors. It takes some efforts to understand the way these factors work and the reason they trigger the attack.

Here, one needs to get a clear understanding of what exactly causes panic disorder. It is quite possible that the person with panic disorder may have developed a highly sensitive nervous system.

Thereafter, chronic stressors may have over stimulated the nervous system and made it hyper active. Here, the nervous system is ready to fire even at the slightest trigger. Whenever the nervous system faces this sort of hyper alert situation, it is referred to as a ‘Sensitized’ form of nervous system.

When the nervous system reaches the stage of being sensitized, a small stimulus may result in a minor moment of worry in a different individual. The result is an onset of the usual fight or flight response. Now, this response can be seen in a form of a panic attack in the person with sensitized nervous system.

The symptoms are quite frightening. Hence, people may fear of getting another attack. The fear ultimately results in a cycle of panic and hence, one may experience more attacks.

3) Here are some other causes that may lead to a panic attack or a series of panic attack in an individual:

a)	Stress

Sometime, stressful situation tend to result in panic attacks. In case, you fear stress a significant cause of panic attacks, look for professional counseling. This is an integral part of most people who are in to demanding careers.

The best way is to relax. You must also make some efforts to identify minor symptoms that lead to an attack know how to stop this from happening. Relaxation techniques or medication can really help.

b)	Lifestyle and Diet

The food you take plays a major role in triggering panic attacks. For instance, Niacin, Vitamin B12 and Thiamin are very helpful in keeping your nervous system maintained. These also have the ability to reduce the possibilities of panic attacks.

c)	Avoid alcohol and Caffeine

Alcohol tends to raise the level of hyperactivity and enhances the amount of alertness. This results in a type of agitation. Caffeine has a potential to stimulate heart beat and sugar may trigger hyperactivity and mood swings.

Keeping the above mentioned tips in mind and meeting your health care professional on a regular basis would help you reduce the frequency of the occurrence of panic attacks.

The simple answer is that having an anxiety or panic attack is pretty much a mind game. Yep, psychology is a huge factor since panic attacks are all based on manifesting fear in a persons mind, actually fearing fear itself.

What that means is that people like us with panic disorder feel the need to be in control of all our thoughts at all times for fear that if we don’t we will lapse into a panic attack.

So if we were to take medications or drugs, this might alter our thought process and involuntarily cause us to not feel “in touch” with ourselves. Lets face it there are many medications including drugs that can cause people to feel “weird”.

This is why herbal treatment for panic attacks is very much desired for those that suffer from panic attacks.

Ingesting Lemon balm herb and teas has been known to be beneficial for people suffering from anxiety, insomnia, nervousness, etc.. Using Lemon Balm herbal treatment for panic attacks helps to relax people and their nerves which has been used for many, many years.

Lemon balm also has sedatives in some of the plant’s chemicals such as citronella, volatile oils, as well as Citrals A
