Panic attacks are sudden surges of overwhelming fear that that comes without warning and without any obvious reason. Causes of panic attacks are not known precisely but doctors do know that they are caused by a small organ in the brain called the Amygdala. Panic attacks are often experienced by sufferers of anxiety disorders and other psychological conditions involving anxiety, though panic attacks are not always indicative of a mental disorder, nor are they uncommon. These attacks are sudden feelings of terror that strike without warning. Panic attacks are generally brief, lasting less than ten minutes, although some of the symptoms may persist for a longer time. This startling data means that anxiety attacks and panic attacks are the most common emotional disorders and are more common than bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD, phobias, alcohol abuse or depression. Though it is often a purely terrifying feeling to the sufferer, panic attacks are actually an evolutionary body response known as the fight-or-flight response occurring out of context. First time panic attacks are usually one of the worst experiences of a person’s life. Ending a panic attack and making sure that it will not recur is the dream of every sufferer.
