Having a panic attack is something that nobody likes to deal with. The feeling of your chest tightening as if you were having a heart attack is not good for anyone. There are actually ways that you can stop panic attacks without medication. They don’t involve a doctor, medication or a trip to the nearest pharmacy. I know all too well the unkind visit of a panic attack and have found personal ways that I deal with them, hopefully they will help you as well.

If you haven’t had a panic attack you can not possibly understand the cause behind them and so don’t treat that person as though they were crazy. They probably feel that way without you telling them so. However, if you have ever had a panic attack you understand the need to put an end to them. Panic attacks are generally created by stress of course. Isn’t stress the number one contributor of many things, panic attacks just being one of them? Therefore, it is no wonder that people wish to find ways to stop panic attacks without medication as many times the medication can just cause more problems.

With stress being the number one contributor to panic attacks you need to do what is necessary to cut down on he stresses in your life. You might think that sounds difficult to do but you just have to be dedicated to the solution and look at the bigger picture. If you think about what it is that causes you stress it will amaze you at the number of them that can be eliminated.

Let us say that the reason you are so stressed is because of your schedule. You have kids to run to soccer, violin practice, dinner to make and everyone in bed by nine with many other things left to do the rest of the week. Figure out a solution, whatever it takes, because if you aren’t healthy enough to enjoy taking your kids to where they need to be then odds are you need to quit. Find someone to help carpool, break out the crock-pot to work on a good dinner the slow way and cut back on the things that give you that, “Oh man I’m stressed,” feeling.

Taking charge of your mental state is the best way to stop panic attacks without medication. When I feel as though something is really stressing me out, I decide if it is something I can change or not. Of course having bills and such is always going to be stressful, it is for everybody. But you know what? Everybody does have them, has had them and probably will always have them. The only difference is that some have just learned to accept that things such as bills and debt are always going to be a part of their lives and went on.

Looking at my checkbook sometimes I can just feel that pinch in my chest coming on when I see how tight things will be. If that happens I think to myself, “will my stressing actually change the situation?” In other words, will my stress and worry bring us any more money? No. All it will do is make me tired, cranky, and extremely stressed. Therefore, I take charge and tell myself to let it go, it will not change anything. And, that makes it a lot easier.

To stop panic attacks without medication simply means that you need to be aware of your own situation and be willing to take charge of it. Do you really want to allow the stresses of the world to run your life?

Unless you know the facts, you may mistake the chest pains that normally accompany panic attacks for a heart attack.

Every year, thousands of people having chest pain, difficulty breathing, pain or numbness in the left arm and tingling throughout the body end up in a hospital emergency room because they believe they are having a heart attack. Typically, a few tests are run, and the patient is sent home because the nature of the attack he or she experienced is one of panic, not coronary.

It’s easy to understand how a panic attack can be mistaken for a heart attack; the two share several common symptoms-with subtle, but recognizable differences. For instance, the chest pain from a heart attack is focused in the center of the chest and is crushing, as if a heavy weight is sitting on top of the chest. It is usually persistent, may radiate to the left arm, neck or back and lasts longer than 5 – 10 minutes. Heart attack victims don’t hyperventilate (unless the person’s fear of heart attack triggers a panic attack), any tingling they experience is usually confined to the left arm, and vomiting is common.

During a panic attack, chest pain is localized over the heart and described as “sharp, and comes and goes. The pain usually intensifies with breathing in and out, and pressing on the center of the chest. Panic attack may cause nausea, but vomiting is rare, and if tingling is present, the entire body tingles. Hyperventilation almost always precedes a panic attack. Using deep breathing techniques dispel this and combined with relaxation exercises, other panic attack symptoms disappear in less than 5 minutes. If the location of the pain moves to the center of the chest, doesn’t go away within 10 minutes, is accompanied by more than one incident of vomiting or diarrhea, or goes away and returns a few minutes later, you should immediately get medical attention.

Panic attacks don’t cause heart disease, and some experts say that they actually affect the heart similarly to the way cardio exercise does, by causing the release of adrenaline, increasing the heart rate, and expanding blood vessels. On the same note, heart disease doesn’t cause panic attacks, although a person with a history of panic attacks who is actually having a coronary may also panic for fear of worsening the heart damage, dying or being disabled.

Using the correct techniques and exercises, you can learn to control panic attack symptoms. I’m one of those with anxiety/panic disorders who have benefited from these practices. I’ve learned to overcome the symptoms of panic attack and differentiate them from heart attack symptoms. It takes practice to control panic attack symptoms, but if you learn to recognize the difference between panic and heart attack signs, and you know that what you’re experiencing is only a panic attack, they’ll be much easier to deal with.

If you want to learn more about heart attacks and how to deal with panic attacks, there is a great amount of information on the Internet. Learning the difference between the two kinds of symptoms makes all the difference in how you react to panic attacks!

Did you know that every 8 seconds someone in the US has a panic attack? True! And sometimes I’m one of them! How about you?

I’ve had panic attacks that have lasted 30 minutes, and was absolutely certain I was having a heart attack! I couldn’t breathe, I had chest and neck pains, my left arm hurt, yet at the same time was numb; how weird is that?. Although I still feel the symptoms of panic attack coming on, from time to time, I’ve learned how to take control of my thoughts and reactions, and have changed my lifestyle to drastically decrease the chances of panic attack. Click Here To find out Step-By-Step how I took control of my Anxiety and Finally Ended My Panic Attacks

In this article, I’ll show you how to make your own self diagnosis.

Sudden Onset And Disappearance Of Symptoms

The key thing to look out for is that for all panic attacks, the symptoms come on very, very quickly – often within just a few seconds. A typical attack lasts about half an hour and then symptoms always disappear afterwards. Occasionally the panic attack sufferer thinks that he or she still has some minor symptoms left over but this is usually “somatic” – i.e. all in the mind.

Rapid Heart Beat

Most sufferers report an increased heart rate and a feeling that the heart wants to come out of the chest. It is not uncommon for sufferers to think that they are having a heart attack and they will commonly also feel psychosomatic chest pain.

Dizziness/Fainting

This is a very common symptom. Some people also report a lack of motor coordination and balance problems.

Feeling Like You Are Going To Die

Many sufferers get an intense feeling of fear that they are going to die and although they cannot explain it, it does feel very real to them.

Profuse Sweating

This is very common and a good sign that you have a panic attack (as opposed to some other condition). This is because sweat production increases in the system responsible for panic attacks.

Shortness Of Breath

Again, this is a very common symptom of a panic attack and one that provokes great fear in the sufferer.

Here are some tips for overcoming panic attacks:

(1) Recognize that that is what is happening to you. Once you realize that you’re not “losing your mind” or having a heart attack, you can start to realize that it’s not nearly as serious as what you thought might be happening to you. This can ultimately lead to your ability to mentally cope with the attack and overcome it.

(2) Be prepared. Formulate a plan ahead of time and you may be able to cope with your symptoms and reduce the number of panic attacks you have.

(3) Some tips for overcoming panic attacks will work well for certain people and not as well for others.

(4) Learn and practice breathing exercises. When you are able to control your breathing you may be able to lessen or avoid a panic attack.

(5) If you have trouble learning a breathing exercise, make an appointment with a behavioral therapist.

(6) Try relaxation techniques. As with breathing exercises it is important that you learn and practice them before you have a panic attack.

(7) Make lists and keep one at home and one with you.

(a) A telephone support list: This list will contain the names and phone numbers of people who you can call when you are having a panic attack.

Many people describe anxiety attacks as a lightning bolt out of a clear blue sky due to the sudden onset of extremely uncomfortable symptoms. Their breathing become rapid, they start gasping for air while their heart starts pounding madly, they feel numb and dizzy. These symptoms can be so intense that they feeling like dieing – literally.

For most, anxiety attacks often occur without warning and with no apparent reason. A person who have no anxiety problems in his whole life may simply start to have one suddenly.

The main problems comes when it start interfering with normal daily activity. For instances, a person may never have difficulties shopping alone, taking a bus or eating in public when they unexpectedly have an “attack” during one of those situation. After that episode, he could be so traumatized by it that he start associating that situation with extreme anxiety and avoid it.

For others, the thought of being alone is enough to trigger another attack itself. They seek security in the company of others and is convinced that their personal safety depends on having someone nearby at all times.

I am sure you will agree that neither situation can be deemed acceptable. You cannot lead this kind of life forever.

The good news is that anxiety attacks can be controlled and stopped forever. The biggest hurdle is in understanding the myths and facts about it. A large part of their fear of anxiety attacks stem from the thinking that it will kill them – which is totally untrue.

Myth: The attacks are caused by my medical problems.

Facts: Anxiety attacks are rarely caused by medical problems. BUT the way you REACT to your medical problems CAN induce anxiety attacks.

Myth: I am having a heart attack!

Facts: Unless you have an existing heart condition, such attacks DO NOT pose any threats to the heart. You CANNOT have a heart attack due to anxiety.

Myth: I REALLY feel like dieing, its so real, what if its true?

Facts: No matter how great that feeling is or how bad the symptoms are, it doesn’t change this fact – you are NEVER going to die from anxiety attacks. Not convinced? Seek out the emergency room physician who have seen thousands of people who sincerely believes that they are going to die from anxiety attacks, NONE of them died when they left the hospital.

Does any of these myths applies to you?

To control anxiety attacks and stop it forever, you need to tackle its roots – fear. This irrational fear is the main culprit. The fear of having another attack, constantly dreading that it will happen again. Its this feeling that causes it to occur again and again.

Know that you cannot be harmed, you will ALWAYS be fine. You feel like having a heart attack, you feel like fainting and dieing. But will it happen? NO! It NEVER happen. Convince yourself of this fact. Know that anxiety attacks can never harm you and you have nothing to fear!

Everyone feels stressed and anxious sometimes but for people that suffer from panic attacks the problem can be much more serious. People who regularly suffer from panic attacks can actually have physical symptoms such as dizziness, trembling, difficulty breathing, abdominal pain etc. Some people have even gone to the emergency room believing they were having a heart attack. The physical symptoms of anxiety may not be life threatening but they can be crippling, keeping people from being productive at work, driving a car, or interacting with people. This article is going to give you 5 tips for controlling panic attacks.

1. Learn the triggers:

Everyone is different and what triggers a panic attack for one person may not trigger an attack for someone else. If you can learn to identify the situations that trigger your panic attacks that can help you prepare for them and cope with them.

2. Avoid caffeine:

Coffee, soda, diet pills, and other products may contain caffeine. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system which may aggravate or possibly even trigger a panic attack.

3. Learn relaxation techniques:

Relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga, or breathing exercises will help you to remain calm and focused. During a panic attack you are overreacting to whatever your trigger is and learning to relax and remain focused can help to put a stop to the overreaction.

4. Get plenty of sleep:

When you don’t get enough sleep you will feel added stress which may make you more susceptible to a panic attack. Getting plenty of sleep will help to alleviate stress and reduce the chances for triggering a panic attack.

5. Exercise regularly:

Exercise releases endorphins into the bloodstream. Endorphins are hormones that give you a natural feeling of euphoria. Regular exercise will also boost your energy level, improve your self-esteem, and help you to relax all of which will help to reduce the chances of having a panic attack.

In addition to the tips above there are many herbal supplements that can be taken to help relax and help reduce anxiety. For some people a visit to a psychiatrist who can prescribe medication may be necessary. It’s always best to consult a medical professional when trying to treat any medical condition.

People experiencing panic attacks usually have symptoms ranging from nervousness, increased heart rate, social phobia, dizziness, lack of sleep, feeling of having a heart attack etc.

Causes of Panic Attacks:

It is important to understand that panic attacks or panic disorders are not a physical ailment. A lot of people confuse this to be something wrong with their body and start taking treatments and medications.

Every one has certain levels of anxiety in their day to day functioning. It is when these anxiety levels soar beyond acceptable levels that it results in panic attacks. Anxiety is a natural phenomenon that is meant to protect us from possible dangers. It is our survival mechanism which triggers the fight/flight stimulation and sends that adrenaline rush. Unfortunately, sometimes due to our past experiences and the way we have related to things and situations, our mind tends to perceive a relatively harmless situation to be a potential danger and thus triggers the physical sensations like increased heart rate etc.

A lot of people resort to medications and drugs to get treatment for their panic attacks. Unfortunately, this is a wrong method as drugs can only give temporary relief from the physical symptoms and does nothing to treat the root cause of panic attacks or its prevention in future. Further, it leads to severe addiction and causes more anxiety and panic in a long term than the actual panic attack itself.

The first step in treating a panic attack is the understanding that it is caused by the mind and that the panic attacks are not a physical ailment. Now, you need to treat the root cause of this treatment by meeting anxiety and panic attack in its tracks instead of delving on the symptoms and always playing catch.

The right way to cure panic attacks is to meet anxiety at its tracks and not give in to it by treating the symptoms. Joe Barry teaches a method called One Move method, which when applied will put you on course of getting rid of panic attacks forever in quick time without any medication.

I cured my Panic Attacks and Anxiety Disorder Using Joe Barry’s One Move Method. Visit Cure Panic Attacks Now to read my Story and Discover how you can Get rid of your Panic Attacks forever by Treating the Root cause of panic attacks.

Anxiety attacks usually occur suddenly and without warning. Sometimes there’s an obvious trigger – getting stuck in an elevator, for example, or thinking about the big speech you’re giving in a few hour – but for most cases, the attacks come out of the blue.

Anxiety attacks usually peak within ten minutes, and they rarely last more than a half hour. But during that short time, the terror can be so severe that you feel as if you’re about to die or totally lose control. The physical symptoms are themselves so frightening that many people believe they’re having a heart attack. After an anxiety attack is over, you may be worried about having another one, particularly in a public place where help isn’t available or you can’t easily escape.

This is where the real problem begin. This constant state of “worrying about another attack” is what makes anxiety attack stay. The more you fear and worry about it, the more likely it will hit you again…and again.

The key to getting rid of anxiety attacks lies in “undoing” that unnecessary fear. A main part of the fear comes from “believing that your about to die, or your stuck with some incurable illness”. In actual fact, your very far from dieing…and your certainly not going “mad” or incurable.

You cannot die from an anxiety attack, this is a fact, not a myth. Know that you will not die and assure yourself. Hiding and running away from it will not make anxiety attack go away. Accept the fact that you have anxiety attack and confront it. Once the reason for fear disappear, so to will the body’s reason for maintaining the panic response.

Your first panic attack should be a learning experience that will help you control attacks in the future. Sometimes people with a panic attack go to the emergency room thinking they are having a heart attack as the symptoms are similar and come on suddenly. You’ll feel things like sudden periods of extreme fear, anxiety, shortness of breath, dizziness, trembling, rapid heart beat, hyperventilation, tingling sensation, nausea, etc. When they learn that it was a panic attack and knowing the difference they can start taking control of their future attacks. This is important because often a panic attack will keep you from even functioning.

Panic attacks are caused by many physical, mental and emotional triggers. Genetics may play a part and females are more apt to get them than men. Allergies or sensitivities to food, drink or chemicals can trigger an attack along with memories or trauma. Alcohol and drug can also cause panic attacks and disorders. Serious and upsetting experiences along with everyday events could trigger an attack.

Panic disorder may lead to “situational avoidance,” where the sufferer feels they have to avoid every place or situation in where attack has occurred and might not even leave their house which could be a very serious disruption to a normal life.

Control subjects were less likely to have panic attacks then patients with panic disorders after both drank a high amount of caffeine, according to results of a small study by Isabella Nascimento, MD, and colleagues at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil.

People who had went to a doctor for treatment told me that they were usually told they should avoid caffeine in colas, coffee, chocolate and tea.

I’ve talked with several people who gave me the following natural treatments they have used to cure or avoid panic attacks without using medicine.

Deep Breathing

One of the best forms of panic attack relief is to simply take deep, slow breaths to prevent hyperventilation. By getting hyperventilation under control you avoid things such as the dizziness and lightheadedness which happens because there is too much oxygen being taken to the brain at one time.

Exercise

This appears to be a one of the best ways of dealing with a panic attack once it’s started. An adrenaline rush usually accompanies an attack and the exercise can bleed it off according to people who use it.

Aroma therapy

After listening to a number of people talk about using aroma therapy to combat panic attacks it appears there are two schools of thought. The first swears by using smells that bring back pleasant memories, such as baby powder, certain flowers, farm animals or barbecuing. The others said that aromas from essential oils or candles were the best.

Meditation

This is a way that several people said helped them from having attacks or by being able to stop them once they started.

Think happy thoughts or take your mind off your problem

Others told me that once an attack started they tried to empty their mind of anything but pleasant things that they had done in the past and it appeared to help them. They also said taking your mind off the attack with things like counting backwards from one hundred was helpful.

The above ways are used by ordinary people to cure or get over a panic attack. In some cases they just can’t do it themselves and need professional help. Below is some information on several different natural methods used to cure people with panic disorders.

Getting Professional Help

Hypnosis

DianeUlicsni, director of The Hypnosis Center in Lake Oswego, Ore., suffered from chronic panic attacks for many years. She finally found relief through hypnosis and is now a board certified hypnotherapist. She says that hypnosis — recognized by the American Medical Association since 1958 as a form of treatment — is one approach that is non-drug and can greatly ease or even cure panic attacks.

Laugh your panic attacks away?

That’s a good strategy, says Steven Sutanoff, PHD, a clinical psychologist in Irvine, Calif., and past president of the American Association for Therapeutic Humor. He uses humor visualization with his panic attack patients, telling them to imagine themselves in a situation where they’ve laughed uncontrollably. When they have a panic situation, they are able to return to the picture of themselves laughing.

Cognitive Behavorial Therapy

James D. Herbert, PHD, associate professor of clinical psychology at MCP Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, says that cognitive behavioral therapy is his choice for treating panic disorders. Cognitive-behavior therapy is made up of two parts: One is to identify and modify the thinking patterns that produces anxiety (cognitive therapy), and lessening anxiety by exposing the patient to fearful scenarios (behavior therapy).

If you suffer from panic attacks try some of the treatments listed above. They have worked for people I talked with and maybe they’ll work for you too.

A panic attack embodies an abrupt rush of disconcerting physical symptoms, wedded to thoughts of impending ruin; this may create symptoms such as making a scene, having a heart attack, or not being able to breathe. While your first panic attack may have a distinct trigger, further episodes can be unpredictable in terms of time or space.

A true panic attack includes actual physical distress in the form of fast heartbeat, shortness of breath, a confused state, faintness or lack of concentration. Not all of these symptoms need be present to represent a panic attack. Once someone has had several panic attacks they may become fearful that this will overtake their life.

He or she may hesitate to be alone, to venture far from home, or to be in public places. Even when not experiencing an anxiety attack, the person with these attacks often becomes increasingly nervous and apprehensive. He or she attempts to remain physically and psychologically tense in preparation for the next attack.

This Panic Attack Self Help Program will teach you self-help skills you can use to overcome panic attacks. You will learn how to handle your worries about symptoms and how to control the symptoms themselves. Then you will discover how to venture out into the situations that you once avoided.

Part of panic attack self help is to learn about different types of medications available. You need to find out how to work with your doctor and figure out and manage any possible physical causes that are increasing symptoms. If you sometimes think about things that are bothersome or unwanted, or feel as if rigidly following routines are the only way to cope with stress, you could be one of millions who have obsessive-compulsive disorder.

It may be as mild as doubting whether you turned off the iron before leaving the house, or it may be as severe and disabling as washing your hands for hours each day. But whatever its degree, it is upsetting, distressing, uncomfortable, and can disrupt your life or destroy your most important relationships. So learning panic attack self help becomes important. Self help book and anxiety control books can be of good help.

Panic attacks involve both physical and emotional symptoms, including sense of doom, heart attack, difficulty breathing, increased heart rate, dizziness, and confusion. The first attack is usually triggered by something specific, but subsequent attacks can occur anytime. Episodes like this can leave a victim feeling helpless, alone, and always anxious. Fortunately, our Panic Attack Self Help Program is there to help. You will learn how to deal with your symptoms and eventually be able to conquer situations that once triggered attacks. Attacks can be decreased or overcome by thoroughly studying our self help book and anxiety will diminish over time.
