* Palpitations

* a pounding heart, or an accelerated heart rate

* Sweating

* Trembling or shaking

* Shortness of breath

* A choking sensation

* Chest pain or discomfort

* Nausea or stomach cramps

* Derealization (a feeling of unreality)

* Fear of losing control or going crazy

* Fear of dying Numbness or a tingling sensation

* Chills or hot flashes

…then you’ve experienced firsthand some of the possible symptoms of a panic or anxiety attack. If you are reading this page because a loved one suffers from these symptoms and you are trying to understand or help, it’s hard to appreciate what they go through.

Just try to imagine what it feels like to experience one, if you can.

Here is a typical example:

Standing in a supermarket queue, it’s been a long wait but only one customer to go before you make it to the cashier. Wait, what was that sensation? An unpleasant feeling forms in your throat, your chest feels tighter, now a sudden shortness of breath, and what do you know—your heart skips a beat. “Please, God, not here.”

A quick scan of the territory—is it threatening? Four unfriendly faces queue behind, one person in front. Pins and needles seem to prick you through your left arm, you feel slightly dizzy, and then the explosion of fear as you dread the worst. You are about to have a panic attack.

There is no doubt in your mind now that this is going to be a big one. Okay, focus: Remember what you have been taught, and it is time now to apply the coping techniques. Begin the deep breathing exercise your doctor recommended. In through the nose, out through the mouth.

Think relaxing thoughts, and again, while breathing in, think “Relax,” and then breathe out. But it doesn’t seem to be having any positive effect; in fact, just concentrating on breathing is making you feel self-conscious and more uptight.

Okay, coping technique 2:

Gradual muscle relaxation. Tense both shoulders, hold for 10 seconds, then release. Try it again. No; still no difference. The anxiety is getting worse and the very fact that you are out of coping techniques worsens your panic. If only you were surrounded by your family, or a close friend were beside you so you could feel more confident in dealing with this situation.

Now, the adrenaline is really pumping through your system, your body is tingling with uncomfortable sensations, and now the dreaded feeling of losing complete control engulfs your emotions. No one around you has any idea of the sheer terror you are experiencing. For them, it’s just a regular day and another frustratingly slow queue in the supermarket.

You are out of options. Time for Plan C.

The most basic coping skill of all is “fleeing.” Excuse yourself from the queue; you are slightly embarrassed as it is now that it is your turn to pay. The cashier is looking bewildered as you leave your shopping behind and stroll towards the door. There is no time for excuses—you need to be alone. You leave the supermarket and get into your car to ride it out alone. Could this be the big one? The one you fear will push you over the edge mentally and physically. Ten minutes later the panic subsides.

It’s 10:30 a.m. How are you going to make it through the rest of the day?

If you suffer from panic or anxiety attacks, the above scenerio probably sounds very familiar. It may have even induced feelings of anxiety and panic just reading it. The particular situations that trigger your panic and anxiety may differ; maybe the bodily sensations are a little different. Or maybe it happened to you for the first time on a plane, in the dentist chair, or even at home, while doing nothing in particular.

If you have ever had what has become known as a “panic attack,” take comfort in the fact that you are by no means alone.

A panic attack always comes with the acute sense of impending doom. You feel you are either about to lose your mind or one of your vital bodily functions is about to cease functioning and you will end your days right there among the canned goods and frozen food.

You are by no means alone; you’re not even one in a million. In America, it is estimated that almost 5% of the population suffer from some form of anxiety disorder. For some, it may be the infrequent panic attacks that only crop up in particular situations-like when having to speak in front of others, while, for other people, it can be so frequent and recurring that it inhibits them from leaving their home. Frequent panic attacks often develop into what medical physicians refer to as an “anxiety disorder.”

One of the first steps to regaining control of your life is getting helpful information. This site will give you that, and more.

The beginning of your recovery starts here. What you will learn is that there is a very good chance you are about to end the cycle of panic attacks in your life. You will learn not only to regain the carefree life you remember once having, but will also gain new confidence in living. Your answer to living free from “panic” or “anxiety attacks” is at hand.

This site demonstrates that the panic and anxiety that you have experienced will be the very key to your courage and success.

Begin the road to recovery by browsing through the site. While many of you may have read almost everything you can possibly read relating to panic and anxiety I assure you this site offers something very effective.

Did you know…?

The key difference between someone who is cured of panic attacks and those who are not is really very simple. The people who are cured no longer fear panic attacks. I’ll try to show you how to be one of these people as well.

What if I told you the trick to ending panic and anxiety attacks is to want to have one. That sounds strange, even contradictory, but let me explain.

The trick to panic attacks is wanting to have one-the wanting pushes it away. Can you have a panic attack in this very second? No!

You know the saying that “what you resist, persists.” Well that saying applies perfectly to fear. If you resist a situation out of fear, the fear around that issue will persist. How do you stop resisting–you move directly into it, into the path of the anxiety, and by doing so it cannot persist.

In essence what this means is that if you daily voluntarily seek to have a panic attack, you cannot have one. Try in this very moment to have a panic attack and I will guarantee you cannot. You may not realize it but you have always decided to panic. You make the choice by saying this is beyond my control.

Another way to appreciate this is to imagine having a panic attack as like standing on a cliff’s edge. The anxiety seemingly pushes you closer to falling over the edge.

To be rid of the fear you must metaphorically jump. You must jump off the cliff edge and into the anxiety and fear and all the things that you fear most.

How do you jump? You jump by wanting to have a panic attack. You go about your day asking for anxiety and panic attacks to appear.

Your real safety is the fact that a panic attack will never harm you. That is medical fact. You are safe, the sensations are wild but no harm will come to you. Your heart is racing but no harm will come to you. The jump becomes nothing more than a two foot drop! Perfectly safe.

They are usually accompanied by an overwhelming fear of catastrophe – the person may feel they are dying or suffering a heart attack, or they may fear they are going mad. They can occur in response to specific situations (such as crowded areas) or spontaneously and with no obvious cause. They are usually short-lived (lasting a few minutes) but are so unpleasant that a person may live in fear of it happening again – in many cases, this will lead to the person avoiding situations that they think will trigger an attack (“avoidance behaviour”).

However they can occur outwith these other conditions – a study in 1994 found that 3 people in every 100 had experienced panic attacks alone.

Panic Disorder is the term used by Psychiatrists for those psychological conditions in which panic attacks predominate.

Psychological Symptoms of Panic Attacks

Intense anxiety
Fear of dying
Fear of losing control or going mad
Depersonalisation (the unpleasant feeling that you are not “real” or are detached from yourself)
Derealisation (the unpleasant feeling that your environment is “fake” or you are an “actor in a play”)

Physical Symptoms of Panic Attacks

Shortness of breath or feeling “smothered”
Choking
Palpitations (feeling the heart racing or beating irregularly)
Chest pain
Sweating
Dizziness or feeling faint
Nausea or abdominal discomfort
Flushing of the skin or feeling chilled
Trembling or shaking

The feeing of being unable to breath can lead to a compensatory increase in breathing rate (hyperventilation) by the person. This in turn can affect the body adversely, leading to both a worsening of the physical symptoms above and additional symptoms:

Physical Symptoms of Hyperventilation

Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
Numbness or tingling sensations in the hands, feet and face
Headache
Weakness
Spasms of the hand and foot muscles

In a panic attack, people will usually experience at least 4 of the above symptoms, although most experience many more than this. For a diagnosis of Panic Disorder, the person will experience at least 4 panic attacks in a 4-week period, or experience significant fear of a further attack (and exhibit avoidance behaviour) for 4 weeks following a single episode.

Treatment

If the panic attacks are associated with other conditions such as generalised anxiety, phobia or depression, then the appropriate course of action is to address these underlying issues first – the panic attacks should subside as these other issues are resolved.

If the panic attacks are the main problem, then (as with most psychological problems) two courses of action are available – drug treatment and psychological therapies.

The drug treatment of panic attacks limited. Sedative drugs such as the Benzodiazepines (e.g. Diazepam (Valium)) are very effective in the short term, but are highly addictive and can lead to dependence. Further, when these drugs are withdrawn, a resurgence of the panic is likely. Antidepressants, particularly the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Citalopram (Cipramil) and Paroxetine (Seroxat), are licensed for use in panic disorder. They can cause an initial worsening of symptoms when first taken, and can cause other side effects such as gastro-intestinal disturbance and sexual dysfunction. Drug treatments are not as effective as psychological therapies in these conditions.

NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) recommends Cognitive Therapy for the treatment of panic attacks and panic disorder. Their research has shown it to be more effective than any drug treatments. Therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) involve the patient seeing a therapist on a one-to-one basis for hour-long sessions. The total treatment course is typically between 6 and 12 sessions, with one session a week. The therapies involve an explanation of the psychological and physical symptoms of panic attacks, and may involve the deliberate precipitation of a panic attack during a session. The aim is to reduce the fear associated with the physical symptoms – this fear is often a cause of the attacks itself and the associated avoidance behaviours. Once the fear of the panic attacks is reduced, the attacks themselves will lessen in frequency and severity and, hopefully, disappear altogether.

Despite the clear recommendations by NICE, the availability of Cognitive Therapy remains limited in the NHS. If your GP or local Mental Health Trust is unable to provide the appropriate treatment for your condition, they may be able to recommend a therapist in the private sector.

a racing or pounding heartbeat

dizziness and lightheadedness

feeling that “I can’t catch my breath”

chest pains or a “heaviness” in the chest

flushes or chills

tingling in the hands, feet, legs, arms

jumpiness, trembling, twitching muscles

sweaty palms, flushed face

fear of losing control, dying and/or going crazy

Panic is not necessarily brought on by a recognizable circumstance, and it may remain a mystery to the person involved. These attacks come “out of the blue”. At other times, excessive stress or other negative life conditions can trigger an attack. During a panic attack your brain has moved into panic mode and in order to really restore order you need to learn how to switch your mental activity back to the rational part of your brain. What’s more is that you need to learn a technique that will allow you to do so in a split second, regardless of where you are or what you are doing. A program called Panic Away is founded on a method for relieving attacks called the “one move technique.” Aside from teaching the method, the program comes with CD’s, DVD’s, and e-book and a member’s forum to communicate with others who have suffered from panic attacks. Support groups can really make a difference so you know you’re not alone.

While each person suffering from panic attacks may have slightly different feelings or chain of events they go through leading up to their attacks, there are a few fairly common symptoms or combinations that most people will experience.

These symptoms include:

Hyperventilation or some difficulty with breathing

Tingling feelings in some or several parts of the body

An extremely rapid heart beat or irregularities of the heartbeat

Tightness throughout the chest area

Dizziness or feelings of losing consciousness

Feelings that are variously described as quivering, quaking or shuddering

A queasy stomach

Feeling of being disconnected from the body or mind

Sweating even though the surrounding temperature seems normal

Excessive fear of dying

Fear of losing control of the body

Panic attacks are a little strange in that they can occur at almost any time and in any situation. That’s what makes them such a challenge to beat. They usually only continue for a few minutes. Sometimes they can last up to as long as half an hour, but rarely longer.

Lots of times, for whatever reasons a person will only have one or two panic attacks and then never have another. Perhaps, the issue that was causing the extra stress in their life is settled and things become fairly normal again.

But, if the panic attacks continue they will probably come at shorter intervals and can be tied to particular events or situations. The repeated attacks will more than likely lead to constant concern about having more panic attacks which will have a major impact upon a person’s behavior and outlook on life. If the panic attacks continue to elevate then the development of panic disorder is a possibility.

The symptoms of panic disorder include:

Repetitive and unanticipated attacks not related to any one condition or location

Continual concern about having more attacks leading to increasingly higher and higher levels of fear with less time where there are feelings of normalcy

Fairly sweeping changes in behavior because of the attacks—including avoiding situations and locations where panic attacks have happened in the past because there is a feeling these situations or locations are the cause of the attacks

These are the symptoms of panic attacks and panic disorders. If you believe you, or someone you know, are suffering from any of these symptoms take the steps to more fully understand the symptoms and get some tools to help deal with them.

One of the unfortunate results from suffering from excessive stress and anxiety is a physical reaction of your body to the signs and symptoms of anxiety. Your body is telling you that you need to rest momentarily. But when you are experiencing a panic attack, it’s anything BUT restful. Cindy had her first panic attack while George and her were driving home from a Diamondbacks baseball game. They were about 25 miles from home when Cindy began to feel a bit “off”. She was having trouble breathing, her body felt disconnected, and her heart was beating at what seemed like 100 miles an hour. Cindy felt like she was dying. She kept saying over and over again, “Please not now. I’m not ready.” The good news is that she wasn’t dying – obviously!

So, let’s look at the signs that you might be having a panic attack. The following list gives tell-tale warning signs of an oncoming panic attack.

· Palpitations
· A pounding heart, or an accelerated heart rate
· Sweating
· Trembling or shaking
· Shortness of breath
· A choking sensation
· Chest pain or discomfort
· Nausea or stomach cramps
· Surreal-ness (a feeling of unreality)
· Fear of losing control or going crazy
· Fear of dying
· Numbness or a tingling sensation in your face and limbs
· Chills or hot flashes

It is surprising how many people go to the hospital emergency room thinking that they’re having a heart attack only to find out that it’s a panic attack. They’re that overwhelming!

Here are some tips on “How to Stop a Panic Attack”

Start breathing deeply – in through the nose, out through the mouth. Think relaxing thoughts, and again, while breathing in, think “Relax,” and then breathe out.

Maybe if you just try to relax your muscles. Tense both shoulders, hold for 10 seconds, then release. Try it again.

IF the adrenaline is really pumping through your system, your body is tingling with uncomfortable sensations, and now the dreaded feeling of losing complete control engulfs your emotions. No one around you has any idea of the sheer terror you are experiencing. For them, it’s just a regular day and another frustratingly slow line at the grocery store.

You realize you are out of options. It’s time to run. You excuse yourself from the line looking embarrassed. There is no time for excuses—you need to be alone. You leave the supermarket and get into your car to ride it out alone.

It’s important to realize that these anxiety attacks are very real to the people who are having them and they should never be pushed off to the side.

Please remember there is hope for you and there are many ways to overcome Panic Attacks and Anxiety.

Another great method you can use to stop these attacks is to learn when it is happening, and then immediately pick something up and focus all of your attention on it. Start to describe the object to yourself. Tell yourself how it looks, feels, what color it is, etc. Alternatively, you can get into knitting. Knitting requires all of your attention and with all of the soft yarns available it will feel great in your hands as well.

There are many things you can do to trick your mind out of having a anxiety attack. There are panic attack and anxiety treatment options online that are designed to trick your mind out of experiencing a Panic Attack and they do a really great job.

When you are able to stop panic attacks before they start, you will never have to worry about being in a social situation where you are panicking ever again.

Whilst frightening, common symptoms of anxiety are often caused by the fear of actually suffering a panic attack in the first place. Bouts of anxiety often occur when something the sufferer would consider stressful is about to happen. This could be a job interview, flying, driving or even just leaving the house. In order to temporarily stop the symptoms the sufferer often avoids such situations.

Panic Attack

Symptoms can be sudden and extremely intense. These symptoms can often occur “out of the blue”, last for up to 10 minutes and then subside. However, some attacks may last longer or happen one after another, making it difficult to work out when one attack ends and another begins.

A panic attack is generally characterized by four or more of the following symptoms:

Palpitations, pounding heart, or accelerated heart rate

Sweating

Trembling or shaking

Sensations of shortness of breath or smothering

Feeling of choking

Chest pain or discomfort

Nausea or abdominal distress

Feeling dizzy, unsteady, lightheaded, or faint

Feelings of unreality (derealization) or being detached from oneself (depersonalization)

Fear of losing control or going crazy

Fear of dying

Numbness or tingling sensations (paresthesias)

Chills or hot flushes

Anxiety

Anxiety, on the other hand, generally intensifies over a period of time and is directly connected to disproportionate worry. The symptoms of anxiety are similar to the ones above and may include:

Muscle tension

Disturbed sleep

Difficulty concentrating

Fatigue

Restlessness

Irritability

Increased startle response (over-reacting to shocks)

Increased heart rate

Shortness of breath

Dizziness

While some of these symptoms are similar to many of the symptoms associated with panic attacks, they are usually less intense. Another significant difference is that unlike a panic attack the symptoms of anxiety may be persistent and very long lasting — days, weeks or even months.

General Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

GAD can be extremely debilitating and often the sufferer has to adapt their lifestyle or change career because of their anxiety disorder. This can be depressing for the sufferer and may lead to them becoming isolated and withdrawn. GAD is, as you can see, a vicious cycle. The more a sufferer worries, the more likely they are to to feel disconnected from their normal life and extremely unhappy.

If you are suffering from any of these symptoms then you are surely looking for a way to cure anxiety and stop panic attacks before they start. Therapy and medication might help — but may not fully relieve you of the fear of having another anxiety attack.

Whichever of these symptoms you are dealing with — effective treatment is available.

Joe Barry, a former sufferer of frequent panic attacks, has developed a technique which can remove the fear and break the cycle of panic attacks, GAD and anxiety allowing you to return to your normal everyday life. This system has helped over forty thousand sufferers in the last seven years to completely eliminate their symptoms.

Reality is you do not have to ever suffer from another panic or anxiety attack again — how nice would that be?

The system is called Panic Away and it uses a simple method called the One Move Technique™ which can return your anxiety levels to normal — naturally and within seconds.

Panic attacks – what to do to cope…

If you’ve done any research on anxiety attacks, you’ve likely learned several coping strategies like taking medications, using breathing techniques, meditation techniques, learning positive affirmations, or trying to focus on something else. While these techniques can help you cope with a panic attack, they won’t stop you from having another one. What I’m about to share with you is a technique that will help you long term.

Try this…

In order to really cope with anxiety attacks, the key is to become comfortable with your feelings of anxiety. Everybody has anxious thoughts, it’s how we react to those thoughts that is different. So, the next time you feel an anxious thought coming in, casually let it in and observe it – label it as what it is, just a fearful thought, and nothing more, and certainly nothing you can’t handle.

Whatever you do, don’t try to force it away. By letting your thoughts of fear in and observing them, you stop feeding into the cycle of fear, and you can change the way you react to it. Don’t judge your thought or analyze it, just label it, notice that it’s there, and then carry on with what you were doing.

It won’t be easy at first, but the more you practice this technique, the better you’ll get, and the sooner you’ll be able to say goodbye to panic attacks for good.

Panic attacks – what to do to eliminate them from your life once and for all…

In order to eliminate panic attacks from your life completely, all it takes is a little bit of learning and practice on your part. It’s important to learn as much as you can about your own personal panic triggers, and gather all the tools you can that can help you deal with those triggers. The one I’ve shared with you above is just one of many you can have in your arsenal in your war against panic.

Here’s what to do next…

If you suffer from anxiety attacks or panic disorder, you absolutely need to go get your hands on Joe Barry’s FREE 7-Part Mini Series on how to end panic attacks.

It’s not uncommon for a person suffering from an attack to show up at the E.R., or like I did, call 911 because they think they are having a heart attack.

If a thorough medical exam can find no reason for the symptoms, then quite possibly you did have a panic attack. It’s something you probably don’t want to experience again but you have to in order to get over it.

Symptom Number 1: General Uneasiness

It’s not uncommon to have a feeling of anxiety before the attack becomes full blown. If you just have a nagging feeling that something is not right or something bad is going to happen when there is really no reason for the uneasiness, then you are being set up for an attack. Some people feel a tingling in their body when this feeling comes on.

Symptom Number 2: Irrational Fear

The feeling of uneasiness can quickly turn into a sense of extreme fear. This fear will be painfully real to you. The fear may be of an immediate perceived threat but often times is a fear of a future event. For example, if you are driving a car you may have an immediate fear of a particular vehicle but more likely it will be a fear of losing control and causing a crash, an event that is not currently happening but one that you are sure will.

Symptom Number 3: Tightness of Neck and Chest

Your irrational fear has triggered your fight or flight reflex and your brain has ordered the body to produce and start pumping adrenalin. Muscles will start to contract in preparation of fighting or fleeing. Your neck muscles will tighten as well as your chest muscles.

Symptom Number 4: Rapid Pounding Heartbeat

The pumping command from the brain will increase both your heart rate and the pounding of your heart in order to quickly distribute the adrenalin. It is this symptom that leads so many panic attack sufferers to the ER as they think they are having a heart attack. Coupled with the increased heart rate will come a difficulty in breathing and/or swallowing.

Symptom Number 5: Perceived Loss Of Body Control

You may become dizzy or have an “unsure” feeling about your ability to control your body movements. It probably will not be as bad as vertigo but you will not have the confidence to do simple things like walking.

The good news is nobody has ever died from a panic attack. The bad news is that to a panic attack victim, it certainly feels like you are dying. Panic attacks are a serious condition that can greatly impact on your quality of life. Simply trying to avoid further attacks is not the answer. You need help and there are several therapies available. Do some research and then take on your panic attack issue head on.

We all like to think we are competent individuals who are in control of ourselves and our lives. But for those who suffer from panic attacks, a very great fear is the loss of control while having an attack. This is a common dread, and it’s something that should be addressed. Putting the fear to rest will go a long way towards reducing your anxiety and panicky feelings.

When you have a panic attack, you experience a variety of unpleasant physical and emotional sensations. People who’ve had such an episode often learn to dread having another. They spend much of their time worrying about when or if another one will strike. But since we know that a panic attack will not physically harm you, what is really so scary about it? The underlying worry may be losing control of your body or behavior.

What if you started acting bizarrely? What if other people saw you curled up on the floor, or striking out at anything in your path? What if you started crying or screaming uncontrollably? What if you lost control of their bodily functions or began to vomit? What if… you can fill in the blank with your own secret fear.

It’s important for sufferers to put this terror into perspective. The reality is that someone having a panic attack rarely loses control. People nearby most likely won’t even notice anything wrong.

This fear is a symptom of the general anxiety and stress that you are experiencing. It’s not a predictor of the future. As a panic attack sufferer, you already have considerable anxiety in your life. Your body and mind are under stress. Sometimes you feel like a pressure cooker ready to blow its top. A panic attack would be the final trigger to cause you to lose control, or so your anxiety is telling you.

However, when you turn down your level of anxiety, through mental or physical stress reduction techniques, you will automatically diminish the fear of losing control. And you will have less fear and dread about having another panic attack.

Controlling your breathing can be a major step in overcoming anxiety. It sounds too simplistic. But those who learn correct breathing methods and practice the skill regularly report that they feel less anxious. If they start to feel bad, they are able to bring mind and body back to a more balanced state, simply by breathing properly.

Fear of losing control is something that causes panic attack sufferers a lot of distress. It may even keep you from going places or doing things you want to do, so it’s important to deal with the fear. Remember that even in the middle of a panic attack, you’re not in physical danger, and you have more control than you may think.
