This is an attack that happens any time without a reason to a person. It is a form of panic disorder. The causes can be anything. A traumatizing event that had occurred in that person’s life is enough to cause it. But the person does not necessarily have to be directly involved in the incident. Being a witness is also enough. But it depends on the degree of the event. It depends on how tragic it really is. The person would feel apprehension and starts worrying about things. So, what are the signs to look for when having a panic attack? The symptoms are similar to a heart attack but it is less dangerous. The victim starts from experiencing shortness of breath and rapid heart beats. It the rapid beating results in chest pains, the victim will now experience numbness in the limbs.

Next are hot and cold flashes accompanied by sweating and nausea. While all these things are happening, the victim will now experience psychological symptoms. They first feel detached and start having thoughts of dying or going crazy. The whole panic episode would last at least ten minutes. If you noticed, many of the symptoms are things the person would feel when encountering real danger but, in the case of person experiencing panic attack, the danger isn’t real.

The whole episode will start from the brain and the whole body will start reacting with all the symptoms presented above. But the attacks have to be triggered by something. If a person who is about to cross the road sees a road accident, he or she usually avoids the road with busy traffic. The traumatizing effect of the place, object, person, or event related to the incident can all trigger a panic attack.

A more psychological explanation is that the brain will trick the person into believing that the object related to an incident can cause them harm or even death. The body now releases adrenaline into the blood stream. This will excite the muscles and give it instant boost in strength. This explains the rapid breathing and chest pains.

For the adrenaline to work, the body needs oxygen and the victim starts breathing in rapidly. The heart needs to transport this supply of oxygen as fast as possible. This will make the heart pump faster and the result is a chest pain.

How about the nausea feeling? A shortage of oxygen will occur in the brain and the victim will, in effect, feel that nauseating feeling. The person will also feel dizzy as well.

If you encounter a person who is experiencing a panic attack and you can see that there is really nothing to be panicking about, the first thing to do is to calm the person down. Have the person take in deep breaths to ensure that the brain does not run short of oxygen. For the mental side of things, a therapy will have to be administered. Relaxation techniques can also be learned by sufferers.

Want to discover more about tips for panic attacks?

A panic attack can manifest itself in a number of ways. The most common signs are heart palpation, sweating, trembling, hyperventilating and a feeling that you are losing control. The best way to deal with these symptoms is to first understand what is happening to you. The trick to panic attacks is that they fool you into thinking that they are something far more serious, such as a heart attack. If you know you are having an attack you should tell yourself that it is ONLY a panic attack and that it’s nothing more serious than that. This in itself will allow your body to calm down a little and reduce the symptoms.

Once that is done the next step is to start breathing normally. This might take a bit of practice especially if you are hyperventilating. Take slow, deep and controlled breaths. This will calm your body down even further and will reduce the amount of adrenaline pumping through your blood stream.

The next thing to do is to accept your feelings. Do not fight the panic attack. This will only magnify and perpetuate it even further. Validate and give reason behind those feelings. Understand the context and why you are experiencing the things you are feeling right at that moment in time.

Doing these 3 simple things will stop an attack dead in its tracks and you will begin to feel fine again momentarily. What you must focus on however is not how to stop panic attacks as they occur, but how to prevent them and eliminate them once and for all. This requires a little more insight and time but will well worth it in the end.

The symptoms are often disproportionate to the event. They can be very severe leading the sufferer to feel totally out of control. So what can we do stop a panic attack without medicatiom when an attack seems close?

a) Acknowledge, believe, and know that you have the power to stop this. Say the word STOP and repeat whilst checking and slowing your breathing. Take deep breaths in for the count of 7 and very slowly out for the count of 12, this will reverse the fight or flight affect.

b) Focus on your memory of a peaceful scene and describe it to yourself – This will distract you from your frightening thoughts and help restore perspective. Your thoughts are enormously powerful in this, so check them regularly to make sure that you are not winding yourself up to an attack which of course makes an attack more likely to occur.

c) Focus on what triggered the feelings of panic. Understanding the triggers and gaining insight will allow you to take control. It is an emotional reaction based on previous experience, and you really can master your thoughts to stop this happening. Just as an aside, your diet can have a massive affect on your mental and bodily reactions, so please reduce caffeine, alcohol, fats sugars and processed food. If you are feeling anxious steer well clear of caffeine particularly, as it will only serve to stimulate your nervous system and worsen your symptoms.

d) Stop the chain of thought by doing something different – Move around if you can which will distract the chain reaction and also burn off the excess adrenaline.

e) Realize that this feeling and condition is not life threatening, and you really can bring it under your control.

Getting a sensible life balance and learning to relax totally will help you tremendously in the longer term. If you are serious and determined about finding a fast and lasting solution to anxiety and panic, I would recommend that you look closely at my review on the Panic Away Program. Meditation practices will also help you focus and find lasting peace and serenity, and you can achieve altered states of consciousness quickly and easily with Binaural Beats recordings. They are effective upon first use and no extensive practice or discipline is required. Just listen with head phones, relax and enjoy!

Wishing you lasting peace and happiness.
