They may range from mild nervousness at the thought of going to work or facing an issue in your life to full blown panic attacks which are debilitating and prevent you from doing anything.

The good news is that these attacks are something that you can overcome and get over with the right mindset and tools. If you have the will to do it then it can be much easier than you may have first thought.

The following five tips will help you to overcome and manage your anxiety and panic attacks.

Step 1 : Recognise There Is A Problem

Firstly, before you can take any steps to overcoming your anxiety and panic attacks you need to recognise that they are a problem. Many people get so used to having both anxiety and panic in their lives that they stop recognising that it is not the best way to be.

Until you are able to see that anxiety and panic are not something you want in your life any more then you will struggle to get rid of them.

So firstly, is your anxiety and panic something you want to keep or is it time for you to now get rid of it?

Tip 2 : Understand That You Can Solve It

We would all love a fairy godmother to come and wave a wand to make our problems go away, but it’s not going to happen. Now you have recognised that your anxiety and panic attacks are something you want to change you need to realise that there is only one person who can get rid of these panic attacks, and that is you.

Step 3 : Decide Your Desired Outcome

Now you know you want to get rid of your anxiety and panic attacks and know that you can make these changes, it’s time to decide what these changes will be.

How do you want your life to be when you have made these changes? What will be different in your life? Don’t try to plan how you will get to this desired outcome, that’s the next step, just decide how you want to be when you are free of your those anxiety attacks you used to have.

Step 4 : Make A Plan

Next it is time to make a plan. How are you going to get from where you are now to where you want to be? How long is it going to take? Make sure you are realistic about both the plan and the timescales, erring on the side of caution if you are in any doubt.

Avoid attempting to do too much in too short a time, which is a temptation many of us face. It’s all too easy to try and do everything at once and then not succeed. The next step is one of the biggest keys to succeeding not only in situations like this, but with anything you want to do.

Step 5 : One Step A Day

With your plan now made, it’s time to take action. Even if you just do one thing every day to help you move towards your desired outcome, then you will get there. If you can do this, then you are virtually guaranteed success. Remember, avoid trying to do everything in a single day and take one step at a time.

This five step plan will help you overcome your anxiety and panic attacks and move towards your desired outcome. So long as you do at least one thing a day to bring you closer to that desired outcome, you can’t help but succeed.

Panic disorders, on the other hand, can be much more severe. People who suffer from these disorders live in constant fear and anxiety, for ongoing periods of time.

The symptoms of isolated panic attacks and chronic disorder are much the same. A disorder is more difficult to deal with because part of what makes it worse is the constant worrying about when the next attack will come. This makes the attack that much more severe, and the viscious cycle continues to get worse.

Panic disorder needs to be treated as quickly as possible. If it isn’t treated properly, it will continue to escalate and can lead to a condition called agoraphobia, where the sufferer remains housebound because of their fear of having an attack while in public situations.

These panic disorders affect a wide age group. They can show up in the teenage years right through adulthood. Major stresses or changes in a person’s life can sometimes trigger them. The effects of panic can range from mild to very serious, in some cases causing social withdrawal and the earlier mentioned agoraphobia.

Symptoms of both panic attacks and panic disorders include the following:

- Chest pains
- Dizziness and/or lightheadedness
- Elevated heartbeat
- Shortness of breath
- Nausea and other stomach problems
- Shaking or trembling
- Difficulty breathing
- Tingling sensation in your extremeties

Panic disorders also often include the following symptoms:

- Lingering worry
- Fear of the next panic attack
- Depression
- Social withdrawal

While the symptoms of panic attacks and disorders are similar, the effect they can have on a person’s life is vastly different. In either case, however, it is best to discuss the problem with your doctor. They will be able to give you a more thorough diagnosis and prescribe the appropriate treatment plan.

Anxiety is otherwise a normal reaction to stress that people commonly experience at various points in their lives. Generally speaking, anxiety helps people to cope with difficult situations until they are resolved (tense situations at work, harder studying for an exam, focusing on an important speech…).

However, for about one in every twelve people anxiety is so persistent and severe that it creates serious problems. Anxious feelings may be so uncomfortable that result in avoiding everyday activities and can escalate into anxiety and panic disorders such as panic attacks.

Panic attacks are episodes of intense fear or anxiety that comes without warning and without any obvious reason. They are far more intense than just having a feeling of being stressed out which most people experience. Panic attack happens suddenly and can be particularly debilitating because they can occur at any time, even during sleep. Many people (about one-third) who suffer from panic disorder often become agoraphobic.

Agoraphobia is the abnormal fear of being in a situation where one might experience anxiety or panic attack. People suffering from agoraphobia may experience severe panic attacks in situations where they feel trapped, out of control, or too far from their personal comfort zone or an area where they have control of their environment. Agoraphobia is a debilitating condition that can bring fear, shame and isolation to those who suffer from it.

Symptoms of anxiety and panic attacks?

Symptoms of anxiety and panic attacks can include pounding heart, a sense of suffocation, nausea, dizziness, sweating, disorganized thinking, migraine headaches, hyperventilation, breathing difficulties, tightening throat, chest pain, shaking and trembling, depersonalisation, fear of losing control, fear of dying and many more. Beyond anxiety and panic attacks themselves, a key symptom is also the persistent fear of having future panic attacks.

Panic attacks are usually brief, lasting less than ten minutes. Although the exact causes of these disorders are not fully known, studies have shown that a combination of biological and environmental factors may be involved. In many people, the symptoms develop in association with major life changes (like getting married, having a child, starting a new job, etc.) and major lifestyle stressors.

Why so many people today suffer from anxiety and panic attacks is also partially due to our high-stress modern society.

Your muscles tense, your heartbeat speeds up, and your breathing becomes more rapid. You might feel like you are smothering, claustrophobic or you may experience an urgency to get away. On top of that, you may get hot flashes, sweating, and/or chills and trembling, plus numbness, tingling sensations, dizziness, and nausea.

You become overwhelmed by an extreme sense of fear and impending disaster and you lose your ability to think calmly and clearly while experiencing a distorted sense of time and a feeling of unreality.

In the face of a physical threat, accident, or natural disaster, this type of response is normal and can be life-saving. But panic attacks that occur unexpectedly in the presence of normal events can be debilitating. They may happen with no forewarning, at any time of the day or night, and last several seconds or more than half an hour.

The triggers for panic attacks are unpredictable. Most panic attacks are set off by some minor or major stressor. But panic attacks can also be triggered by changes in emotions, or as a response to certain drugs, foods, allergies (including hidden food allergies), hypoglycemia, and illnesses.

A panic attack is an example of an acute anxiety disorder and can affect teens to middle-agers and beyond. Women are reported to experience panic attacks twice as often as men but some believe that is only because men are more reticent to report panic attacks.

Recent studies point to a complex set of causes and panic attacks are regarded as a treatable psychobiological condition (i.e. having both psychological and biological causes). Successful resolution of panic attacks requires an integrated, multi-modality approach.

Even though panic attacks are not a simple condition and there are no simple answers for their successful resolution, herbal therapy can be useful as part of an integrated, multi-modality approach.

When you experience anxiety, your body releases a set of neurotransmitters called catecholamines, which stimulate your central nervous system and activate your sympathetic nervous system. Sometimes your sympathetic nervous system (the high alert part of your nervous system) can get stuck in the ?on? mode leaving you in an ongoing state of anxiety – a fertile ground for panic attacks.

A class of herbs called nervines helps to turn off the sympathetic nervous system by gently facilitating the functioning of the parasympathetic nervous system ? the part of the nervous system that prompts relaxation – helping us to wind down and come off ?high alert?.

It is a good idea to experiment with different anti-anxiety herbs before you are in a crisis or panic situation. Try out several herbs in varying doses. Start with a low dose and increase if needed so that you will know how the herb affects you and how to use it when you need it.

Some effective herbal nervines to consider using:

Oatstraw (Avena sativa) ? the green milky tops of oatstraw provide a wonderful soothing, nourishing and gentle herb for frayed and stressed nervous systems. Oatstraw has a restorative effect on an exhausted nervous system reliably strengthening the whole nervous system after prolong stress. Oatstraw has both an immediate effect (useful when experiencing extreme nervousness and anxiety) and a more long-term restorative effect. Oatstraw is well tolerated by even highly sensitive people and is used for nervous debility, stress, weak nerve and energy force, anxiety, depression, exhaustion, and general fatigue.

German Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla/ Matricaria recutita) ? an all time favorite ?because it works. Chamomile tones the nervous system, relaxes your muscles and calms nervous digestion. It has mild sedating properties and is not as strong an herbal sedative as valerian or passionflower. However, chamomile is a great option for anxiety in children or teens and for anxiety associated with mild sleep problems. If you are allergic to ragweed, asters, or chrysanthemums you are better off choosing another anti-anxiety herb.

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) ?has mild sedative properties and is useful in conditions of nervous agitation with sleep problems and digestive complaints. Lemon balm is especially useful for over-anxiety that causes digestive problems such as nausea, bloating, and colic like pains. Traditionally lemon balm was used to lift the spirits and encourage longevity. Lemon balm is a relaxing tonic for anxiety, restlessness, irritability, and mild depression and its actions will quiet the racing heart that often accompanies anxiety. It has mild anti-thyroid effects and is best avoided by people with hypothyroid problems.

Skullcap (Scutellaria laterifolia) ?tonifies and relaxes the nervous system and is useful for anxiety of all types especially anxiety and irritability that is hormonally based such as premenstrual syndrome. It is a sedative nervine and has mild anti-spasmodic and anti-hypertensive effects. Skullcap is a great herb to use when your anxiety is accompanied by a runaway mind that is stuck on worry. It is tolerated well by most people and has few side effects.

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) ? one of the most well known anti-anxiety herbs, valerian is a potent herb whose active ingredients, valepotriates, bind to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain (similarly to the drug Valium). The use of valerian does not, however, result in dependence or the development of tolerance but instead tones the nervous system.

Valerian can be used to improve the sleep quality and relax both the skeletal and smooth muscles. Valerian should not be used for those with chronic exhaustion, adrenal fatigue, thyroid disorders, and depression as it may increase anxiety, worsen present symptoms, and/or result in excessive restlessness in these conditions.

Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) ? a strong calming, anti-spasmodic herb that is good for severe daytime anxiety. Passionflower is also a good choice for middle of the night waking terrors, nightmares, and the onset of sudden anxiety feelings. It acts as a central nervous system depressant giving a calming, relaxing and anti-anxiety effect and is specific for anxiety related to insomnia, muscle tension, restlessness, and nervousness due to worry, overwork, hysteria, or excessive excitement. If you are taking an MAO inhibitor, you should avoid taking passionflower except under supervision.

Stress Relief Tea

Here is a simple herbal tea mixture that I have found effective in my private practice working with women having mood and energy problems.

Mix together equal parts of the following dry herbs:

?Oatstraw

?Lemon Balm

?Skullcap

?Nettles

?Orange

?Chamomile

Use 1-2 teaspoons of the mixture and steep covered in 8 oz. of boiling water for 5-10 minutes.

The use of herbal nervines as part of an integrative program can help restore a sense of calm and well being, soothe distress, stabilize a confused and overwhelmed energy system, and foster clear thinking.

If you are taking anti-anxiety and/or anti-depressant medications or other medications, have a diagnosed condition or illness, are pregnant, breastfeeding, elderly or very young it is important to consult a knowledgeable health care practitioner before using herbs. Consult a licensed physician for diagnosis and treatment of any medical conditions.

Help for anxiety attacks is here though. In learning how to deal with panic attacks, one can cure panic attacks while the attack is in progress and find ways to relieve the stress and anxiety that causes the attack.

Panic attacks are the body’s over reaction to stress. This stress could come from any number of sources and is not extraordinary in levels, but rather normal. The body for some reason though, will going into full-blown flight-or-fight mode, causing sweats, rapid respiration, rapid pulse, and dizziness. There can be a tightening of the chest and the total sense of a lack of control in the situation. Luckily, there are anxiety solutions that can help cure panic attacks.

While the idea to completely eliminate anxiety is still a dream, remedies to help with anxiety are not. These natural remedies for anxiety often are calming techniques used to control the breathing and the heart rate of the person experiencing anxiety and panic attacks. These calming techniques are often meditations that can be performed on a regular basis to gain familiarity with the practice and then can be used as ways to relive anxiety during an attack. Other natural ways to reduce anxiety include changing one’s diet by removing harsh stimulants such as caffeine, nicotine and sugar. There is also the push towards exercising as a means of eliminating stress and anxiety.

Speak to a doctor about finding the right method to cure anxiety. He or she would have intimate knowledge about the physical and psychological workings of the body that the average layperson would not have. The doctor can determine if the anxiety is caused by a physical condition or if it is a mental condition. He or she can suggest different methods of managing the anxiety and stress that causes panic attacks that may not have previously been thought of. The doctor can also either provide medication to treat the anxiety symptoms or refer another doctor who specializes in help for anxiety and depression.

There are also many support groups for those with panic attacks. These support groups give members an opportunity to discuss their problems without the harsh judgment of society. This is also an area where methods of reducing and alleviating stress are discussed and evaluated by peers. Classes are also offered throughout the year by various organizations to build confidence in situations that are normally worrisome and to help one get over the anxiety caused by a certain action.

By being an active participant in one’s health, one can find ways to relieve stress and find natural ways to reduce anxiety. Pairing these strategies to reduce anxiety with a healthy diet, plenty of sleep, and a good exercise plan can help eliminate panic attacks all together. Creating a healthy body often aids in the creation of a healthy mind.

If you suffer from a panic or anxiety disorder an important part of your recovery process is to gain an understanding of your symptoms. If you don’t understand how your symptoms happen, then you can remain caught up in your fears about them.

Perhaps the first thing to say is, you are not alone! Everyone in the world experiences anxiety to some extent or other! It is part of our natural response to danger, whether that danger is actual, anticipated, or just imagined.

The sensations we experience are part of our Fight or Flight response. This is a natural reaction to danger and is found in both humans and animals. When the fight or flight response is activated, hormones are released throughout the body to enable us to either fight the dangerous situation or to run from it. The effects of these changes on our body chemistry can be quite dramatic:

Sweating; Palpitations; Dizziness; Legs go to jelly; Numbness and tingling; Hyperventilating; Chest pains; Trembling; Shortness of breath; Feelings of unreality; Nausea; Diarrhoea; Fainting; Feelings of loosing control.

It is important to realise that these are part of our evolutionary heritage; the natural way the body protects itself. They are not a problem in themselves and usually recede once the immediate danger has passed.

Many people don’t realise that the way they think when they have an anxiety disorder, turns on their Fight or Flight response. Our bodies can’t tell the difference between the thoughts in our head and a real physical danger.

At this level your brain makes the same judgement call about a very real truck rushing towards you, and that internal voice that says “What if I have a panic attack; What if I make a fool of myself; What if the doctor has made a mistake?” It just sees “danger” and switches on the Fight or Flight response and around we go!

Most non-sufferers of anxiety disorders go through a typical day running their Fight or Flight response at a low level. There may be times where they might peak higher, but these are the exception and not the rule. The causes of these “blips” are usually easy to see – starting a new job, attending a funeral, a heated argument with a colleague, etc.

Others suffer from an elevated level of anxiety on a regular basis. Their feelings can’t be attributed to any obvious cause, it is just there. This elevated level of non-specific anxiety is called General Anxiety Disorder or GAD. People with this disorder often lack the ability to concentrate and feel exhausted all the time.

Above this background level of raised anxiety we have the full blown panic attack itself. If you have experienced one you will know just how terrifying an attack can be. Because they are so unpleasant – we feel like we might be about to die – we begin to fear having another attack. This causes even more fear; and so, like a snowball gradually gathering pace and weight as it rolls down a hill, the cycle of fear gains a seemingly unstoppable momentum!

It is important to recognise that any major life change can act as a trigger to panic disorders. It is not a sign of personal weaknesses or inadequacy. Events such as the death of a loved one, moving to a new home, or a divorce, can all act as a catalyst.

Sometimes an initial attack happens in a situation that then becomes anchored to the attack. A person might have their first panic attack in a car and then associate the car with the panic attack, so just going into a car triggers further episodes.

It is when our levels of anxiety start to interrupt our normal life we have a problem and need to take positive action to resolve it.

The first thing to do if you believe you are suffering from GAD, or have experienced a panic attack, is to get a complete medical check up from your doctor to rule out any underlying physical disorder.

Certain foods are also known to make matters worse. Caffeine is a stimulant that can increase anxiety, and excessive sugar can have a similar effect. Turning to alcohol to “relax” yourself is also a bad idea – it is more likely to make the anxiety worse!

There are also many self-help programmes available that can quickly and effectively help you on the road to recovery. The most important thing is to take powerful action to restore both your health and your confidence. The process begins with gaining an understanding of the symptoms and why they happen. This in turn helps us to lose our various fears, and by doing so we can effectively turn down our Fight or Flight response.

It has been discovered that setraline introduced is very effective as it helps individuals in reducing the depression and anxiety he / she undergoes. It is also efficient for the people who undergo panic attacks. There are many other medications too that can be taken to overcome this panic attack, but setraline is suggested as it is less prone to side affects.

The most widely used medicine for the panic attacks are the serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) that comprises of the medications such as the Prozac, Zolosoft or Sertraline and Paxil. Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin and Valium are the Benzodiapines; The Try cyclic antidepressants such as the Parnate, Nardil, Marplanm, and monoamine oxidize the inhibitors like the Norpramin, Anafranil, and Tofranil. The Benzodiazepines and the SSRIs are found to be largely effective in treating this panic attacks. Sertraline is considered the best medication amongst all the other drugs.

A research was conducted by the Pohl RB, and
They have reported to the American Journal of Psychiatry that Sertraline in the treating the panic disorder is a double bind multicentred trail. In the year 1998, an issue proved that sertraline is the best medicament. The double bind research was randomized and there was a parallel group designed to ensure that the outcomes are valid and consistent. This team compared the Sertraline to that of a sob. A horde of 168 patients suffering from panic attacks were estranged into two sets. One group received the Sertraline and the other got the placebo. The set which got the sertraline as the drug to be taken, received 25mg per day for a week and the research begun depending on the individual. Every person was assessed each day to analyze how the dosage affected the symptoms, when the panic attack occurs, and the period the anxiety or the attack lasts, and the side affects.

The domino effect showed that only 9% of the group stopped using the sertraline to cure the panic attack as it gave side affects. A minute percentage stopped taking the medication as it did not work for them. A very large percentage of people experienced a great change and it has decreased the extent of panic for them. The study said that 62% of the partakers did not undergo any kind of panic attacks in the end. Other results reported that there was a decrease in the symptoms before and after they experience the attack. For the best results dosage of sertraline must be given between 50 mg – 200mg.

The use of sertraline for these panic attacks can be prescribed by the doctor. One will have to get an appointment for evaluation and analysis. The doctor may also refer you to the psychiatrist if he personally feels that you need to be monitored better.

Identifying the triggers that cause the attacks is one way on the road to recovery

When someone suffers from panic attacks, it takes over their entire body and their mind even as they try and regain control of themselves. Their attacks can range from once a day to multiple times and can be quite severe. The severity of the illness determines what type of treatment a person will end up receiving.

Panic attacks are not only emotional but physical as well. The attacks begin with a mental image or trigger that can produce symptoms, both psychological and physical, leaving the person completely vulnerable to all the problems associated with panic disorder.

When the attack begins, the person’s heart will race, they sweat, feel nervous and have severe anxiety. When these symptoms occur, often times, the person is unable to move and when they do… it is often erratic.

Panic attacks keep people from enjoying life and doing any part of their daily routine. Should an attack occur before any appointments, it is probable that the person would be able to keep such appointment. Sometimes the symptoms will not subside for days, weeks and years and then the person will return back to a normal state.

How panic attacks occur can be different for each person and their level of intensity is quite different too. Depending on the condition and the triggers, anxiety attacks could happen everyday, once a month or even once a year.

No doubt if a person has more than one trigger or even three, four or more triggers than it is possible that attacks will more frequent. Sufferers should try and keep up with their triggers to either avoid them or face them head on.

But the coping skills that are available are typically used for those who keep track with their symptoms. For many others, it will not work when they are put into a stressful position. The symptom may be so severe that coping techniques will not respond well, if at all. Sometimes, a trigger cannot be avoid although it is one option that can be used.

In reality, some sufferers have triggers that must be faced head on all the time. Two common triggers are fear and anxiety in the attacks. It is this fear and anxiety that typically results from an object or event of some sort.

Example: A bridge! How many people are afraid of heights and do not like to be on bridges? Bridges can be safe as long as they are maintained. Things like the Minnesota Bridge collapse are not that common but it things like that that will scare people who already have a fear of bridges. This can send them into a complete panic, lasting for a bit of time or until the vehicle clears the bridge.

For others, it could be speaking in public that sets of the anxiety attack. It is possibly that a combination of triggers will set of the attack too.

Examples: For those who may be terrified of heights and enclosed spaces, they will avoid elevators like they are the plague.

Oddly enough, some people did not even need a trigger to experience distress. One day the person is fine, the next complete attack. The body is responding as if it had been in some kind of fearful situation.

To help with all the symptoms, the use of medication is good along with talk therapy. The medication can help with relaxation and prevent the physical symptoms. The therapy will identify the triggers and find ways to cope.
