How Can I Stop My Panic Attacks

Panic attacks can be truly horrible as those suffering from them will know well. Much therapy concerns itself with uncovering the root cause of the panic attacks, in the hopes that by understanding how your panic attacks arise, you will not have to do them anymore.

CBT For Panic Attacks

More modern psychotherapy approaches, such as those from the field of cognitive behavioral therapy, try to get the person to rationalize about their panic attacks, and to take small steps to overcome them. For example, if the person had panic attacks in crowds of people, then they would be asked to gradually expose themselves to larger groups of people whilst maintaining as rational a mind-set as possible. This kind of approach often also involves the person doing a fair amount of self analysis and writing. CBT has been shown to be effective in getting someone to stop panic attacks, although it is often a long-winded and difficult process to undertake.

Hypnotherapy For Panic Attacks

There are many different approaches a hypnotherapist can take to help someone to stop panic attacks. Indeed, some of the approaches may have similarities with those of the CBT practitioner, and many will adopt a ‘let’s go back and find the source of the panic in trance and deal with it’ method. And sometimes this does work, this going back and comforting the younger you, in your imagination, at the time of the initial panic attack.

Hypnotherapy And NLP To Stop Panic Attacks

More modern hypnotherapy will often also use more NLP – Neuro-linguistic programming techniques which involve literally retraining the mind and both conscious and also an unconscious level. Panic and anxiety attacks do have a structure to them, they are a learned response, a ‘conditioned’ response. At some point, for whatever reason, the person suffered from a panic attack. This could be due to a viral infection bringing on symptoms such as dizziness, sweating and shortness of breath. Sometimes when this happens the person begins to panic about the symptoms which then makes them worse and causes more panic, which creates a kind of vicious circle. Other causes of panic attacks are many and varied, but usually involve the sensory system being overloaded in some way.

Panic Attacks And The Vicious Circle

Once someone has, for whatever reason, experienced a panic attack, they may then start to worry that they will have another one, and unfortunately, this imagining having a panic attack can bring one on. Sometimes the person experiences only one or two full blown panic attacks and then lives in a constant state of anxiety that they will have another one. this state is often referred to as pre-anxiety. It is the vicious circle of anticipating the panic that good hypnotherapists will seek to unravel, and those using NLP techniques in addition often find their job much easier.
