How to Stop Panic Attacks Without Avoiding Life
If you are in the unfortunate position of suffering from panic attacks it is only natural that you will want to learn how to stop panic attacks. Before doing this however it is first important to work out why you are having panic attacks.
There are many causes of panic attacks. Some are linked to what may be called external factors, for example, some medications can increase the chances of panic attacks occurring. For others, activities such as driving or being in crowded spaces can trigger panic attacks. These can be thought of as internal triggers as it is our reaction to the situation that is causing the panic attack, rather than the situation itself.
To stop panic attacks it is important to make a distinction between avoiding the actual panic attack and avoiding what triggers them. It is natural for us to try to avoid situations that make us uncomfortable, or in the case of panic attacks, that can cause such unpleasant and frightening symptoms. We often therefore start to restrict ourselves from situations where this might happen. Sometimes this can be conscious but it also happens unconsciously.
We slowly find ourselves going out in public less often, or finding excuses not to use the car. This however is not helpful in the long run as without realising it we will begin to restrict our lives in more and more ways without really addressing how to stop panic attacks for good. Unfortunately if panic attacks are ignored they tend to happen more often and the causes that trigger them will tend to increase.
Panic attacks are normally linked in some way to our being unable to cope with rising stress levels. Many factors contribute to our stress. Some of these we can learn to control or avoid, others we will just try to have to deal with. Overall we will benefit if we are able to develop effective coping strategies for dealing with stress. This often has an added benefit of increasing our self confidence and allowing us to lead fuller, more satisfying lives. The first crucial step in learning how to stop panic attacks is accepting that you do have a problem, and then making sure you follow up and try to solve it.
