Anxiety attacks are no fun
Anxiety attacks are just no fun. If you suffer from anxiety attacks, you know exactly what I mean. Even if your attacks are not full scale panic attacks, they can leave you sweating, trembling, shaking, and with stomach problems and feelings of dread and doom.
Help anxiety attacks
There are several things you can do to help anxiety attack. The first of these is called thought stoppage. You say to yourself STOP! This is not real and not helpful and I am going to go in a different direction.
Another tactic is to stay in the moment. Rather than having “what if” thoughts, ask yourself, “what is happening now” and “how can I respond to it”.
Make lists
Sometimes if you write down the things you fear, contrasted with the things that make you feel calm and happy can give you something to think about if you start to panic. Another technique is to accept your fear and panic – accept and acknowledge the panic attack. Understand what it is and that it really cannot harm you.
Aromatherapy
Oils of lavender, yiang yiang, sage, and other herbs and flowers can have an extremely soothing effect when you apply it to the pulse points on your neck or wrists.
Float with the symptoms
Allow time to pass and “float” with the symptoms rather than trying to make them better or fighting them.
Talk with a supportive person
Find someone who has also experienced true panic attacks; or someone who is highly trained in treating panic attacks. For that matter, family members and other loved ones can offer support and comfort.
Coping statements
Create several statements that you can say to yourself out loud and repeatedly such as:
“No one has ever died from an anxiety attack.” “I will let my body do its thing. This will pass.” “I can be anxious and still deal with this situation.” This does not feel great, but I can deal with it.”
You may not believe these statements to begin with, but as you continue to repeat them they will become true for you over time.
